what’s on WWE LIVE News & Updates

Cardiff International Arena, Sun 2 July Tickets: £25-£70 (sold out). Info: cardiffinternationalarena.co.uk. Following Wales’ biggest ever WWE event in the Principality last September, the franchise returns to its more regular stomping ground of the CIA. Top of the bill for this one is a tag team championship showdown of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens v The Usos; a strong undercard has caused this one to sell out in advance.

LLANDAFF CATHEDRAL FESTIVAL

Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff, Tue 4-Sun 9 July Tickets priced per event; many events free. Info: llandaffcathedralfestival.org. This festival, set in Cardiff’s proverbial leafy suburb and based around its landmark structure, began in 1958 though has had lengthy periods of dormancy. Its revival in 2022 was a success, and is followed by a week of concerts, recitals, classes and workshops. Rowan Williams, Hot Club Gallois and Wales’ current National Poet Hanan Issa are among the guests.

Hope you’ve been enjoying the wonderful weather and that you managed to pop in to see us at Pride Cymru or Cowbridge Pride. We had a great time and the film screenings went down a treat. We also held a reception and film screening at Ministry last month to welcome our guests, members, and supporters in London.

Talking of our Pride screenings, I Shall Be Whiter Than Snow, directed by Frederick Stacey, was shown at the prestigious Roze Filmdagen in Amsterdam earlier this year.

community film – made possible by National Lottery Community Funding – it has been included in the Best Of Roze Filmdagen for Utrecht’s Queer Film Festival in September. And Cardiff, a 2022 short film which also screened at the Prides last month, will be screened at Dublin LGBTQ+ film festival Gaze in August.

Such was the success of this Iris Prize Ruth Jones

On Sat 29 July, we hold our annual Iris Summer Party at St Catherine’s Hall (on King’s Road, Pontcanna, Cardiff). We will be welcoming friends new and old from 2-6pm, and we’ll be introducing the 15 filmmakers who are through to the final of the Best British Iris Prize competition! Iris members will of course have complimentary drinks.

The countdown to the 2023 Iris Prize Festival is on and we need your help. Every year, the Friends Of Iris offer free accommodation to our festival guests and filmmakers, in return for free membership and a full pass for the festival. Interested? Contact grant@irisprize.org

GŴYL FAWR ABERTEIFI 2023: EISTEDDFOD

Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, Sat 1 July Tickets: £6. Info: mwldan.co.uk. Not ‘the’ Eisteddfod, which this year is in Boduan, Gwynedd, but ‘an’ Eisteddfod, starting in the morning before an evening session of choral competitions. These will conclude with the crowning of one winning choir and there’s also the traditional Blue Riband competition, which is for soloists aged 25+.

SWANSEA IN GLOOM WALKING TOURS

HQ Urban Kitchen (starting point), Swansea, Sat 1 July Tickets: £9.50. Info: facebook.com/ hqurbankitchen. With tour guide Gareth Willis Falco, this lunchtime event introduces fellow walkers to the dark side of Swansea – murder, superstition, debauchery and ghosts, they reckon. It’s co-presented by, and starts at, a modish looking café named HQ, which is located in a former police station. I’m sure nothing bad ever happened there though.

CAERLEON ARTS FESTIVAL

Various venues, Caerleon, Sat 1-Sun 9 July Tickets: prices vary per event, many free. Info: caerleon-arts.org. A lengthy list of gigs, theatre, poetry events and other stuff, organised by locals since the early 00s. Highlights for 2023 include the traditional Lit On The Lawn in the grounds of the Priory Hotel on Sat 1 July, trad pipe/drum band Piping Hot playing twice on Sat 8 and Middle Eastern dance troupe Jawahir at the Bell Inn on Sun 9.

Swansea In Gloom Walking Tours - Gareth Willis Falco

54 RUTH JONES

Borough Theatre, Abergavenny, Wed 5 July Tickets: £18/£25 including a book. Info: boroughtheatreabergavenny.co.uk. Last September, Gavin & Stacey hitmaker Ruth

Jones published a novel, Love Untold. This month, it is being published again, in paperback. For this reason, Jones will have a conversation, onstage with Caryl Lewis, and you can eavesdrop by purchasing a ticket. I doubt it will be exclusively about the book but who knows.

Llandaff Cathedral Festival - Hanan Issa

CARDIFF FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL

Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay, Fri 7-Sun 9 July

Admission: FREE. Info: cardifffoodanddrinkfestival.com. This was always a grand day (or days) out back when, indeed I’m sure it is now, although for this writer a large part of the appeal revolved around being able to eat a full day’s worth of calories in free samples, and it may be that COVID and/or cost of living has torpedoed this practise for stallholders.

CARDIFF WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE 2023

Park Place, Cardiff, Sat 8 July Admission: FREE. Info: wiki. worldnakedbikeride.org. The event page for this has a header image which depicts the Wales Millennium Centre and lists a date of Sat 15 July, and while the idea of people turning up in the rik at a random location on a random day is very funny, it’s definitely a week before, starting and finishing in Cathays as normal. Turn up from 12.30pm

HIGH STREET RISING Various venues, High Street, Swansea, Thurs 13-Sun 16 July Tickets: TBC, many events free.

Info: facebook.com/elysiumswansea

Gallery and art space Elysium, who seem to be the prime movers behind this long weekend of events, says that “High Street is fast turning into Swansea’s creative hub”; this month they’re attempting to demonstrate that with the second High Street Rising, following a successful debut in September last year. Volcano, GS Artists, Hippos and the Jam Jar, plus Elysium themselves, are all venues taking part, with live music, art shows, workshops, DJ sets etc all in the offing. Notable among the events so far announced is a closing performance from funky brass big band The Siglo Section [pictured], at Elysium on Sun 16 July.
