Newport’s Big Splash Festival bursts into this summer with a plethora of acts around town. Over two weekend days in July, some 20,000 visitors are expected to drop by, with entertainment as varied as street theatre, live music, and craft activities across the river walkway, John Frost Square, and Commercial Street.
Intriguingly, the festival will dedicate a clown to every corner of the festival, making them hard to miss! Darryl J. Carrington will take on a battle with physics with his juggling spectacle, Out Of The Box, encompassing some cheeky clowning around and a hint of magical trickery. Furthermore, Chicagoan clown George Orange dubs himself The Man On The Moon, a show title referencing the half-moon slack rope on which he performs.
Many Big Splash highlights will undoubtedly be found on its literary stage, which this year is curated by the current Children’s Laureate Of Wales Connor Allen. A Newport native himself, and a regular contributor to BBC Wales and National Theatre Wales, Allen is keen to get young people from marginalised and under- represented groups involved in poetry.
The Little Miss Majorettes is a madcap slapstick performance from a trio of baton twirlers whose skill is no match for their enthusiasm. Also from dance troupe Kitsch & Sync Collective comes Hello Buoys: drawing inspiration from vintage postcards and the joyful activities of a seaside summer, look out for three mischievous yet cheerfully buoyant damsels on their seafaring voyage around the festival.
The community stage, newly renamed the Celebrate Stage, will be rife with local talent. The festival will also play host to an interactive experience with a botanical theme. Festival-favourite double act Flossy & Boo become Myrtle and Mostyn, a pair of brave botanists driven by a thirst for excavation discoveries. They’ll bring fiendish games and hope to uncover hidden secrets about Newport along the way…
