PACKAGING AIRLESS

CANVAS AIRLESS: AS YOU LIKE IT

The brand new range from Quadpack, CANVAS Airless, offers the ability to explore never-before-seen shapes in airless products, enabling customisation with minimal lead time.

Made using patented bag-in-bottle technology, CANVAS Airless is a proprietary

airless container system with a collapsible pouch. The bag-in-bottle is an evolution of the bi-injection blow moulding technology

acquired by Quadpack in 2019. Developed in conjunction with Inotech, the two- phase process lowers investment and reduces development time compared with bespoke piston airless packs. The idea is for preforms to be bi-injection moulded at Quadpack’s airless

manufacturing centre in Germany and stocked in EMEA, the Americas and Asia Pacific, to be blown in a single pass at point of sale in the desired shape. The packs form part of Quadpack’s QLine portfolio of smart, modular solutions,

delivered in the region, for the region. “CANVAS Airless provides a blank canvas for creative design,” says Quadpack’s Head of Market Development, Pierre-Antoine Henry. “With one mould for infinite shapes, it enables greater freedom of expression.

Brands can choose oval, square, convex, concave and other forms – and all without additional outlay or time delay. It sets the new standard in airless packaging, offering accessible added value, along with all the benefits of airless technology.” The pumps can be used at any 360° angle, while actuating the bulk with minimal

waste; CANVAS Airless has a restitution rate of 97%. As a bi-injected, two-layer, pouch-based pack, CANVAS Airless uses 15% less plastic than piston airless equivalents and it can be made with a choice of materials. The QLine range comes with an LLDPE pouch and PET outer bottle as standard,

both recyclable materials. Current outer options include rPET and PETG, while inner options include Surlyn.

DEA: ELEVATING GLASS

A 2021 launch from Baralan, DEA stands for Developing the Evolution of Airless and is a new series of products composed of glass airless containers for a variety of applications. Unlike other airless systems, DEA has no internal plastic container, making it the first airless system in which the filled product is directly in contact with its glass container.

The DEA series uses fewer components compared with traditional airless packs and significantly reduces the amount of overall materials, resulting in packs that are lighter and more functional, but which still offer visual impact to brands, as well as an enhanced user experience. DEA features high-quality glass

packaging which has great formula compatibility. The series is available in two versions: classic and premium.

PEARL 2: THE ALL-ROUNDER

Silgan Dispensing revealed its next generation airless system – called Pearl 2 – at Luxe Pack Monaco 2021, to deliver all the benefits of a standard airless system, such as formula protection from oxidation, 360° dispensing and a high evacuation rate, while also offering materials designed for recyclability, a robust e-commerce design and broader technical capabilities. “Pearl 2 was designed with our

customers’ needs in mind. Our focus in developing the product was on three key areas: sustainability, e-commerce, and improved performance,” says Guillaume de Demandolx, Vice President, Fragrance and Beauty for Silgan Dispensing. “Sustainability continues to be a top expectation when it comes to packaging

and was our first priority. Finding solutions that do not disrupt today’s recycling streams without sacrificing quality and performance is often elusive. “Today’s recycling infrastructure

has challenges in sorting the small round packages typical in beauty products, so we focused on designing Pearl 2 with the right mix of materials compatible with the recycling stream.” To get that mix right, Silgan Dispensing invented LifeCycle Technology, a patented plastic spring in Pearl 2 that enables the removal of non-recyclable materials and metal, which led to the dispenser being made

almost entirely of a single polyolefin. As a result, Pearl 2 has been certified by

RecyClass to not have a negative impact on current European-coloured containers recycling. Pearl 2 also passes third- party e-commerce testing protocols due to its robust design and overcap. The pump can withstand changes in air pressure, which means that it won’t leak during transport or air travel. Finally, Pearl 2 is claimed to

provide improved performance from both a technical and consumer standpoint, with high compatibility and consistency, as well as a longer stroke length for maximum control.
