Supporting the Cinematographer


As long as I can remember I’ve been passionate about photography; about the finished image that supports the script, that supports the story.


I wanted to work in narrative as a cinematographer and when I moved to the UK worked in a camera department. I was taking a lot of stills, made the move to digital and started using Adobe Lightroom to edit my pictures. I made some changes to my photos within the application and later accidentally deleted the XML file. All of my changes had gone. And then when I found the XML file and reapplied it, all my changes came back. I was blown away by the concept of non-destructive editing of my photos.

That early experience with Lightroom in 2008 gave me an understanding of the power of XML - of metadata - and the creative freedom that can bring


to the artist by bringing non-destructive manipulation as an attribute to your camera negative. It was the start of the journey that leads me to the present day.


Fast forward to the release of the Red camera and Red Cine and the idea of digital file-based tools being applied to cinematography. I took one of the first jobs as a DIT on Misfits and worked on both seasons, learning by trial from the first. And that coincided with the iPad launch and putting rushes in the cloud before the term ‘the cloud’ was widely used.

Having a Backup
