EditorWilliam Roszczykintroduces this month’s edition
ELCOME TO the October 2019 issue of F&RM, which this month focuses on power risks, specifically oil hazards, transmission risks and PV panels.
You might imagine that, seeing how integral all forms
of power generation are to modern civilisation, there would be a comprehensive level of fi re protection for each mode of generation. While this is largely the case, it still remains that fi res in power stations, refi neries, solar farms and even in the wiring that powers our homes and businesses are not only eminently possible, but also very common. Fortunately, there are new technologies and products being developed – and new ways of working – that help keep everything running, or help minimise the risk to life for the fi refi ghters who bravely tackle these often particularly dangerous and significant blazes. While we have three specifi c power risk focuses – those of

Want to write for us?
Articles can cover aspects related to fire, business and resilience planning, protection of lives and buildings, or insurance.
Our minimum word count is 1,500 words – we also require a two to three sentence author bio and print quality author headshot, for our contributors’ page, and high resolution images to support your piece. We do not run overt advertorial – the best way to proceed is to explain general principles or technologies in the context of fire and other risks, with mention of relevant products in a case study.

oil hazards, transmission risks and PV panels – the fi rst of those has specifi c and quite diverse articles looking at transformer oil and infrared protection for tank farms storing fuel. The world’s ageing transformer fl eets pose an increasingly dangerous fi re safety risk, reports Midel’s Barry Menzies; while Michael Daub and Torsten Welz of TÜV SÜDwalk us through the implementation of a fi re protection solution at a tank farm, including an infrared measurement system. On transmission risks, Alessandro de Danieli of Schneider Electric shows how advances in technology such as circuit protection help mitigate electrical dangers, before MICC Group’s Richard Hosier asks if the wiring for life safety and fi refi ghting systems is up to code in our buildings, and whether this is enough to ensure safety. PV (or photovoltaic) panels are just one element of
renewable energy that the world at large hopes will help to ease the ongoing climate crisis, but they pose their own problems when it comes to installation and extinguishing panel or farm fires. The first of two articles focusing on PV panels sees Kirk Rosenhan cover potential hazards and risks for firefighters in tackling solar panel and power storage fires. Then, Solar Edge’s Lior Handelsman outlines standards, safety regulations and new technologies designed to keep installers and firefighters safe, as photovoltaic systems grow in popularity. Finally, we have one current affairs article this issue, which sees the Business Sprinkler Alliance’s Iain Cox explain why installing sprinkler systems is wise practice and money well spent in light of the severe impacts of fi re on lives, buildings and businesses. Approaching quickly (and I’m sure to your surprise
as much as it is to mine) is this year’s Fire Sector Summit – see the FPA website at
www.thefpa.co.uk for more information. Our November issue will focus on insurance, including special risks, business continuity and surveying. If you’d like to contribute an article to a 2020 edition of the journal, please get in touch with me at
