Editor William Roszczyk introduces this month’s edition
ELCOME TO the November issue of F&RM, which looks at waste fires in terms of fire service measures, suppression options and site management.
Waste fires produce some of the more visible and news ISSN 1757-1324

Want to write for us?
Articles can cover aspects related to fire, business and resilience planning, protection of lives and buildings, or insurance.
Our minimum word count is 1,500 words – we also require a two to three sentence author bio and print quality author headshot, for our contributors’ page, and high resolution images to support your piece. We do not run overt advertorial – the best way to proceed is to explain general principles or technologies in the context of fire and other risks, with mention of relevant products in a case study.

worthy disruption when they occur, but also have the capability to cause far more localised problems than they might appear to from an outside view. The huge nature of our modern waste disposal and recycling system means that large amounts of potentially combustible material can be tightly packed together, almost serving as the ultimate kindling for a signifi cant blaze. It’s not just the flames and their potential spread or damage that can cause problems – residents or workers nearby are affected due to the toxic gases and smoke released. And above all, the fire and rescue services have to devise new and intuitive ways to deal with such fi res, which can go dormant and restart just when they’re thought to have been extinguished. All in all, these are some of the more diffi cult, complicated and common fires to deal with, and this issue’s features reflect that in their detail and comprehensive coverage. Addressing the fact that there has been an increase in waste fires nationwide in recent years, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service talks us through its work to tackle them and a number of case studies applying new measures. Next, IFC Group’s Angus Sangster explains his work on a theoretical fi re model for waste, and how best to fi ght waste fi res. On suppression options, we have the first of a two
part focus from QBE’s Adrian Simmonds, who analyses fire suppression in waste handling, specifically elements posing risks to the industry. Fire Shield System’s Russell Bonnett refl ects on the fact that understanding all aspects of fi re risk, detection and management in the waste and recycling sector is key to being able to provide the right solution for operators. On waste site management, the Wood Recyclers’ Association’s Andy Hill discusses the risks created by fi re in the waste wood sector, and the changes ahead due to the market’s growth. We also have one current affairs article from Stewart Kidd, who explores portable extinguisher types and questions whether watermist units should be considered more going forward. With the Fire Sector Summit less than a month away,
you can expect comprehensive coverage from the event in London in our December/January issue. For more information, please visit

Our December/January issue (I can’t believe it’s that time
already!) will be focusing on technology response, including modelling and high risk areas. If you’d like to contribute an article to a future issue, please get in touch with me at
