Serco wins nuclear station contract
sector.
A CONTRACT has been awarded by EDF Energy to Serco to provide fi re and rescue services during the construction of Hinkley Point C (HPC) nuclear power station. This contract, which began on 1
October, has a total value of around £6.5 million over six years. Serco stated that as a result, it ‘sees opportunities for new apprenticeships’ that will ‘benefi t local employment’, and it aims to use this model ‘to recruit new fi refi ghters through the contract duration’. Serco, which already runs a ‘range’ of
fi re services across the UK, alongside the International Fire Training Centre, said that it has ‘signifi cant experience’ of delivering such services, such as being the ‘largest fi re services contractor on UK military airfi elds’. Other opportunities include offering reach back and wider skills, as well as drawing on ‘resilience skills’ from its Emergency Planning College. In conclusion, the company added that its delivery model ‘is designed to focus’ on HPC’s ‘current and future
needs’, specifi cally recognising the
‘changing operating environment’ as the station changes from construction to commissioning. As part of the process of consultation and the awarding of the contract, around 22 employees will transfer to Serco. Michael Robertson, head of health,
safety and environment at HPC, commented: ‘Serco came up with an innovative and cost effective solution to our needs and we are looking forward to working with them during this important and challenging project.’ Ronnie Coutts,
Serco’s capability
director of fi re, added: ‘Serco is delighted that we are going to be supporting the HPC Construction Site with fi re and rescue services during the complex build phase of Hinkley Point C. We have world class skills, expertise and experience in the provision of fi re services and we will be able to deploy a highly skilled team to help HPC prepare for and respond to a range of scenarios.’

BWF and BRE collaborate on fire safety THE BRITISH Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Building Research Establishment (BRE) have joined forces to ‘raise awareness’ of the importance of fi re doors. This alliance also aims to ‘help advance’ door design, manufacturing and
fi re
installation standards, with the organisations noting that these doors ‘are the fi rst line of defence against devastating fi res’. Despite saving lives and protecting property when ‘properly built, installed and maintained’, many are ‘badly fi tted, non-compliant, left propped open or damaged’, putting potentially ‘millions of lives at stake’. As part of the BWF’s Fire Door Safety
Week in September, BRE produced a series of ‘emotive and educational’ fi re door safety fi lms, which ‘highlight the potentially
devastating effects’ of fi re and smoke, and the need to ‘ensure that best practice and standards are followed’. Both organisations are part of the Fire Door Alliance, which sees companies certify products under the BWF Certifi re process, while those using the Q-Mark scheme can now join the alliance. Hannah Mansell, BWF head of technical
research and insight, stated: ‘We’d like to thank BRE for its ongoing support, in allowing us to use its facilities for our fi lming. We are delighted to be working in collaboration with a cross-section of the industry, to raise awareness of these life- saving messages around fi re door safety as well as working to help raise standards to ensure the safety of building occupants and fi refi ghters.’
