Suppression options Case study – Dafo installations
FIRE SHIELD Systems Ltd became the sole distributor for the Dafo brand in England, Scotland and Wales earlier this summer. The Lincolnshire based company has just completed installations of the Dafo system on three Liebherr L586 machines in the North East for plant hire specialists GA Smith. These machines are being used for the loading and unloading of biomass at the Port of Tyne. The Dafo system has three key elements: • a linear heat detection cable (LHDC) which detects fire along its entire length. These cables are installed around key fire risks and across the top of the engine department. Linear heat detection is one of the most robust and durable forms of fire detection, and therefore ideal for engine bays
those of insurance underwriters and those of government bodies such as the EA all require discussion at an early stage. Clear guidance from the AHJ at the onset is critical if operators are to avoid costly investment in a solution that is not ‘approved’ or accepted.
Key insights
The experiences and eyewitness accounts of those on the ground on a day to day basis often provide a key insight into recurring fire events or near misses associated with the causes of fires. Regular familiarisation of fire protection systems with all personnel is also

• a unique ‘wet chemical’ extinguishing agent which ‘knocks out’ the flame, smothers the fuel source and reduces the ambient temperature in the risk area
• a pressureless extinguishing agent tank, engineered from solid aluminium, using a factory sealed nitrogen cartridge that is released on detection of a fire. This system is proven to be a safer option than stored pressure cylinders, which can be unreliable in engine bays. The Forrex agent tank can also be installed and fully discharged at any angle, so it still gives full protection if a vehicle overturns and catches fire
Fire Shield has also recently signed a ‘Gold Partner’ agreement with Danish firm VID Firekill, an internationally renowned manufacturer of fixed fire protection solutions
critical in an industry with often high levels of staff turnover. After sales support from a chosen solution provider is also essential. Some solution providers/installers have
manufacturing interests in the products that they promote, but our approach from the onset is to ensure that our proposals are tailored to a specific risk, and we actively seek new solutions where needed. We work with a growing number of accredited manufacturers internationally who have tried and tested solutions developed for the industries we serve, but who can also provide considered responses to advances within the sector.
