If government plans permit, our aim is to

offer at least one face to face member event this year. We would like to host a round table event with senior FPA staff at Christmas (which would be a first for the FPA) to discuss a series of topical themes in an intimate setting.

Future of events

On a personal note, I have been very concerned about the future viability of my work, so I too have been keeping myself up to date with the events sector as a whole by engaging with various speaker briefings. Many of them have had some useful pieces of information we can take away and share with our customers, such as making sure that we are all working together as much as we can to get through this. I genuinely hope to facilitate this through our events at the FPA. The Business Events Sentiment survey

received responses from 556 business events professionals across the UK, and was created to help plan recovery activity post pandemic. In the survey, 38% of respondents stated that September 2020 was the primary month when they expect to see both enquiries and bookings begin to increase, though some believe this will happen sooner. In terms of industry wide recovery,

respondents believed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business events industry will be longer lasting. 50% of respondents believe that the industry as a whole will not return to any form of normality for at least 12 months.

Looking ahead

To conclude, if you have attended one of our many FPA events, you will know that we do not shy away from punchy topics and that we deliver content on subjects that are of most use to you during your working life. We will aim to do this as best we can for the rest of 2020 in a digital setting. Many of us (myself included) do prefer the

interaction face to face environments provide us with, and will certainly miss these over the course of 2020. We gain so much more from seeing and talking to people in the flesh than we do from an online media interaction. Also, at face to face events, Chatham House Rules are much easier to implement. Under these, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s) or other participant(s) may be revealed. In these difficult times, (perhaps as we have no other option), there has been an impressive engagement and support from customers for our digital communication offerings – it is great to see so many people embracing a new way of working. The FPA will rise to the challenge to deliver as much of this content as we can, until the time we can all meet safely again
