Euralarm extinguishing

THE ASSOCIATION has expanded

its reach into

fire extinguishing, aimed at members

‘active’ in water

based suppression systems, portable fire extinguishers, fixed extinguishing and firefighting agents.

An

association covering this ‘was not yet established’, and timing was ‘crucial’ as EU discussions start on renewing construction product regulation and fire requirements.

With unified

representation, Euralarm can ‘strengthen the position’ of the industry, and allow it to be a ‘stronger partner’ for the EU Commission and parliament. Visit www.euralarm.org for more information

Hospital help

WESTERN THERMAL has installed thermal insulation, trace heating and fire stopping solutions on Wrexham Park Hospital Emergency Department’s pipe and ductwork, including fire rated insulation sleeves. Michael Slater, executive operations director at Western Thermal, said: ‘We are proud to be a part of such an important NHS project for the country. Wrexham Park Hospital also adds to our project count in the Slough area, which include LDC data centres and Slough Power.’ For more, visit www.western-thermal. co.uk

Certified partners

SSAIB AND FIA have partnered to help security firms ‘gain fire detection and alarms certification’, and make the ‘innovative project’ available for the next six months. It was set up to aid firms that want to become certified for the BAFE SP 203 scheme, as well as to ‘support a growth in delivering best practice in the fire industry’. Visit www.ssaib.org or www.fia.uk.com for more information

ASFP hosts awards ceremony THE ASSOCIATION for Specialist Fire

Protection (ASFP) hosted the Passive Fire Protection Awards in London last December. These inaugural awards recognised the

Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year and Fellowship of the ASFP, both judged by its strategy group to have ‘highly influenced passive fire protection during 2017’. The Fellowship award was open to ASFP members, and was awarded to Martin Adie of contractor Willmott Dixon, the first main contractor member of the association. Mr Dixon had been a ‘key driver in influencing the industry and raising the quality of installed passive fire protection’, and was recognised for his ‘leadership and long-term awareness of the industry’s needs’. Activities given as examples of this included establishing a fire protection training academy for his company’s staff, where they are ‘taught about the role of passive fire protection [PFP] with the aid of various practical exercises’.

In turn, he was ‘praised’ for ‘advocating the use of third party certificated products and installers’, alongside writing ‘several good practice articles for his employer’s internal quality magazine’. The Passive Fire Protection Advocate of the Year award was open to ‘all involved in fire safety in the built environment’, rewarding an individual ‘who could demonstrate that they are a major advocate of high quality installed PFP’. This was presented to the British

Woodworking Federation’s Hannah Mansell for her ‘dedication and enthusiastic promotion of fire doors as critical life safety products’, including ‘significant activities’ such as a ‘huge number of presentations at conferences and exhibitions’ alongside promoting Fire Door Safety Week. Ticket sales raised £1,700 for the

Children’s Burns Trust, the ASFP’s chosen charity, while members and guests raised £2,135 for Grenfell charities through table donations

Advanced launches Android app

THE COMPANY has added an Android app for its Lux Intelligent emergency lighting testing system, to add to existing iOS and desktop versions. It stated that cloud monitoring is

now possible for the system, which is an automatic test system that ‘shows all emergency lighting is compliant and functioning, with no engineer intervention required’. The new app allows for ‘extremely easy

and more cost effective’ emergency light testing, as well as demonstrating compliance, with all test data stored ‘safely and securely’ in the app cloud ‘for as long as it is needed’. Test reports are also accessible ‘at

any time’, and are automatically shared with relevant contractors or maintenance partners: while the system can be used with

newbuilds as well as retrofitted onto existing wiring and luminaires. In turn, it allows users to keep installation costs ‘to a minimum’, alongside ‘unique’ technical features and compliance with BS 5266-1 and BS EN 50172. Aston Bowles, marketing manager at

Advanced, commented: ‘We’ve developed the app specifically for areas of the public sector who said

they require Android.

However, it was part of our plans anyway to grow the ecosystem of apps and services we offer in the cloud.’
