New Hilti system tackles torque troubles

OVER-TORQUED and under-torqued anchors are a leading cause of structural failures resulting in failed jobsite inspections, according to various independent studies.

Hilti is aiming to consign under and over- torqued HST3 Stud anchors to history with the launch of the next generation SIW 6AT-A22 cordless Impact wrench and SI-AT-A22 Adaptive torque module.

The new lightweight SI-AT-A22 module slots into the base of the tool and has a mechatronic system that processes live data on the settings being done.

When used together, the new system creates the first impact wrench-based adaptive torque system on the market that covers ETA approvals for HST3 stud anchors ranging in size between M8 to M12.

It provides a fast, safe and consistently accurate alternative to imprecise torque wrenches and cumbersome torque bars.

The AT system is made up of three components:

1. SIW 6AT-A22 cordless impact wrench: this product is equipped with intelligent electronics, a more robust anvil and a sleeker nose which can reach into tighter spaces.

2. SI-AT-A22 AT module: a small, very light interface which slots in between the impact wrench and battery. It crunches live data from the SIW 6AT-A22 to recognise when an anchor has been correctly installed.

3. Documentation software: this ensures the AT module's job history can be transferred to a computer and used to create a detailed installation certificate. The user can connect the SI-AT-A22 Adaptive torque module to a computer using a USB cable and can download and record all settings done to produce an installation report using the Hilti AT documentation software.

Once a job has finished, the AT module provides a visual and audible alert before stopping automatically ensuring the job is completed accurately.

AT-ready tools are equipped with the sensors and on-board intelligence to confirm whether an anchor has been torqued according to ETA approvals.

The operator simply inputs which anchor (for example: HST3) is being used, simply by scanning the box with the AT module integrated barcode reader and the tool does the rest. Afterwards, the tool can be connected to a computer to instantly generate an installation report, offering inspectors and specifiers a guarantee that the work has been carried out exactly as specified.

This report lists the product(s) used, whether selected manually or by scanning the anchor’s box along with the completion time and date to meet all certification requirements.

The SIW 6AT-A22, together with the SI-AT-A22 module, can also be used to set standard bolts up to size M16 according to one of Hilti's 30 available torque settings, ensuring consistency in repetitive applications.

The impact wrench is part of the Hilti 22 V cordless tool platform and is equipped with intelligent electronics, a high- efficiency brushless motor, three gears and electronic speed control, a robust anvil and a sleek nose designed to reach into tight spaces.

Both the SIW 6AT-A22 and the SI-AT-A22 module can be obtained through Hilti Fleet Management, whereby a fixed monthly charge covers all service and repair costs up to three years.
