The Red Hart, which dates from the 16th century, was once a coaching inn and is probably the town’s oldest surviving example of this type of inn. The Kings Arms has been in use as a public house since 1800. The second street leading southward from the Market Place is Sun Street. Named after the Sun Inn,

which was the town’s premier coaching inn, the Sun was the headquarters of parliamentary troops who were billeted in Hitchin during the Civil War, and where, in 1770, French prisoners were held overnight in the yard. Hitchin Priory is at the junction with Sun Street,


Tilehouse Street and Bridge Street. The priory is a reminder of a Carmelite priory founded here during the early 14th century and which was destroyed during the
