THE challenge of engaging and retaining people in physical activity doesn’t get any easier. It can even seem overwhelming at times. A depressing report from Public Health England (PHE), launched as we went to press, revealed that four in 10 middle-aged adults fail to walk briskly for 10 minutes a month.

Taking at least one brisk 10 minute walk a day has been shown to reduce the risk of early death by 15 per cent, says PHE, and contribute to meeting the CMO’s physical activity guidance of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise each week.

As part of its new One You physical activity campaign, PHE is encouraging people to build 10 minutes’ continuous brisk walking into their daily routine with a new Active 10 app.

The Active 10 app has been endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners and PHE says that GPs across the country are recommending it to their patients as a tool to help them manage existing conditions and prevent the negative health impact of inactivity.

The research serves as yet another reminder of the need to continue to evolve our products and services in this sector if we are to get people active and to stand any chance of halting the UK’s physical inactivity epidemic, which contributes to one in six deaths and costs the NHS over £0.9bn a year.
