Football hub launches at University of Hull

The University of Hull has unveiled a new football hub as part of a £15m investment in its sports facilities, currently underway. The £1.8m football facility includes a

Major milestone for Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub

The multi-million pound project to transform Great Sankey Leisure Centre into a neighbourhood hub has reached an important milestone with the installation of a new glass roof. Operated by the community interest

company LiveWire, the Warrington centre is being redeveloped to offer leisure, library, health and cultural facilities under one roof. The new hub will have a footprint of 4,626sq m and an overall internal floor space of 6,553sq m on completion. A new glass roof has now been installed,

which will bring lots of light and air into the pool hall once the facility is fully open next year. A new viewing gallery will also soon be

complete, allowing spectators to view both the main and training pools, which have been upgraded to deck level swimming pools. The construction work to refurbish the

existing pool roof and viewing gallery has thrown up significant challenges, which have caused considerable delay to the project and additional cost to its refurbishment. Built by BAM Construction, the hub will be

LiveWire’s first dementia-friendly facility and will include a library, café, sauna and steam, spa, 120 station gym, health services, conference facilities, dedicated spin studio, a changing village, improved pools, external fitness and recreation spaces, tennis courts, and an improved 3G football pitch.

The University of Birmingham unveils new athletics track

An athletics track, built as an international standard training track and comprising a 400m, eight-lane floodlit track with a full range of throws and jumps, has opened at the University of Birmingham. Located on the edge of campus on Edgbaston

Park Road, the track has been built on land leased from the Schools of King Edward VI in Birmingham. In addition to being home to the University’s Athletics and Cross Country Club, it will also be the new athletics venue for pupils of King Edward’s School and King Edward VI High School for Girls, the Birmingham Running & Triathlon Club, and a range of other groups. The Jamaican Team were the first athletes to

test the new track as part of their preparations for the 2017 World Athletics Championships, which took place in London last month “Athletics is a key sport for the University

of Birmingham and it will make a huge difference to our athletes’ training to have such a fantastic track so close to the main campus,” said Zena Wooldridge OBE, the university’s Director of Sport.

purpose-built sports pavilion comprising: eight team changing rooms; two officials’ changing rooms; a physio room; a reception area; a kitchenette; spectator toilets and an equipment store. A natural grass pitch, which was prone to waterlogging, has been replaced with a third generation artificial grass pitch, while the centre’s existing 3G artificial grass pitches have also been refurbished. The sports hub will be used by the

university’s students and partner clubs Cottingham Rangers FC and Hull City Ladies FC. As an official training partner of Hull City FC, the university has strong links with the club, whose Tigers Trust will also use the facility to deliver weekly community outreach sessions. The project, which received £500,000

from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund and £20,000 from The Football Association, is part of a multi-million pound investment to refurbish the university’s sports facilities. The project got underway in September 2016 and includes a new 12- court sports facility, including international- standard netball courts and bleacher-style seating for 700 spectators, and a strength and conditioning suite. The existing sports hall is being

converted into a 120-station fitness suite and dance studio.
