play

Inspired by Paddington Bear, Westminster City Council’s new playground at Paddington Recreation Ground offers inclusive, creative and stimulating play for all ages and abilities.

THE new adventure play space was designed by Ruth Willmott Associates and Playscheme, and part-funded by Westminster City Council. The redevelopment of the playground, operated by Everyone Active, follows feedback from local residents, who asked for a more natural feel to the space, with updated and creative features. An imaginative, innovative and stimulating

space, the playground and its features are inspired by Paddington Bear and features bespoke equipment and integrated landscaping. The project, which took five months to build, includes spaces for infants, sensory, juniors and teens. The infant play area includes the Beachcroft Gardens terrace - seven pastel-coloured playhouses that hug the footpath; and Paddington Station made from Jesmonite brick and complete with a sign, counter, bench and train to encourage role-play. Playscheme also created an artificial grass

play mound with a polycarbonate dome, stepping stones and a HDPE (high density polyethylene) slide and a tunnel. In addition are the usual playground favourites such as a double width stainless steel slide, scramble net, climbing wall, Hexagrip platforms, triple swing set and springers. An inclusive sensory trail allows visitors to

Family-friendly play space

explore the playground in different ways and at their own pace. The bespoke trail space provides a stimulating way to interact with the new flowers, plants, and trees around them, particularly for those who may not use standard play equipment. Features include a Perspex panelled

pergola, sensory panels, a textured and ramped footpath and a range of instruments, including a cadenza (similar to a xylophone), babel drum, congas (hand drums) and soprano pentatonic (freechimes). In the junior play area, the 8.5m steamliner

takes centre stage, complete with a powder- coated steel frame, a 1.2m scramble net, a double-width stainless steel slide and its own mascot - a little bear on a suitcase sitting on the back of the ship. The steamliner chimneys are topped with precision-cut steam clouds. The ship sits on a colourful blue wet pour

rubber surface which also features turtles, a swordfish and a whale to complete the aquatic theme. A clatter bridge links the steamliner to the 14m docklands area, which offers playground equipment including a climbing wall, hexagrip ramp with timber rungs, galvanised chain and a fireman’s pole. A nest swing and roll-on roll-off roundabout complete the junior play area. Playscheme had to respect Tree Preservation
