St George’s College Activity Centre

The new £15m Activity Centre aims to inspire generations of students and the community to engage in physical activity in a ‘Cathedral for Sport’.

ST GEORGE’S College Weybridge is a leading independent co-educational Roman Catholic day school in Surrey for students aged 11 to 18. The school celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and will open a new Activity Centre this September/October. The existing sports centre was small, built in

1984 for a school of 500 boys. Now a growing co-educational school of 1,000 students, the requirement was for a much bigger building. The site is located within the greenbelt and a Grade II listed park so the key challenge was to overcome the height, bulk and massing constraints and demonstrate an exceptionally high quality design worthy of exception to Green Belt policy. Whilst using innovation to create an exceptional, sustainable world class facility for all. The aspiration for this project has always

been to create a building that offers sport for all within an outstanding environment. Even the name of the building, as an ‘Activity Centre’ rather than a sports centre reinforces its vision to deliver Activity for all. The centre comprises a Premiership level

indoor hockey pitch, six court sports hall, a large strength and conditioning suite, dance studio and flexible multi-use areas for group

activities and meetings, presentations, exhibitions, open days and match teas. These spaces are wrapped around the main staircase, which flows up through the building offering views into all the activity spaces. The design takes inspiration from the beautiful stone staircase at Wells Cathedral with its majestic scale and flowing steps, and it culminates at the café pavilion where there are panoramic views out over the athletics track, re- connecting the college to the sports fields and providing access for all.

This forward thinking project utilises many advancements in technology to enhance the user experience such as VR (Virtual Reality), parametric modelling and the most advanced flooring system in the world.

virtual reality A pioneering project, Scott Brownrigg have developed this building from the outset using virtual reality (VR) not only as a design tool, but as a medium to engage with stakeholders, the main contractor and even tradesmen on site.
