Skateboarding appeals and gives a positive, Image: garryjonesphotography
physical outlet to groups within society who are less likely to confront their mental wellbeing. Its link to other outlets such as art and music means it has far-reaching mental health benefits including increased confidence and self-esteem - the positive effects of skateboarding on mental health were documented by Brighton & Hove Council’s Go Skate Project Report 2016. Skateboarding is all about developing individual skill supported by an inclusive skating community. The lack of team element means there is no social pressure and boarders are encouraged to learn and grow at their own pace. Skateboarding has positive social benefits
for the community, providing solutions to difficult issues in a proactive way e.g. teen boredom and anti-social behaviour. Skateboarding will be included in the 2020 Olympic Games for the first time giving significant profile to the sport, which in turn will see an increase in participation.

protective about the sport. Skaters routinely reject those that try to monetise their way of life, especially if they have not demonstrated a passion for skating. Influences from within the skateboarding world are trusted while external influences might be viewed as suspect. That said, the community is open to anyone who has a genuine enthusiasm for skating. Despite being a new organisation, Skateboard England is trusted and because we come from the skateboarding community, we have a genuine understanding of the sport. We are regularly approached to give advice regarding funding and coaching opportunities, talent development and answer more general enquiries. Our reach extends across home nation
borders to the 750,000 skaters in the UK through the National Championships and the Digital Content Hub (App) that Skateboard England is developing. And social media and broadcasting will undoubtedly extend our reach further across the globe.
We have worked with Sport England to
create a business model to show that with some seed funding Skateboard England can become a sustainable commercial entity without the need for ongoing public funding.
raising the profile Skateboard England aims to become a sustainable and credible governing body with the potential to bring the skateboarding community together, to engage with youth and grow the sport significantly amongst girls and women and those currently inactive. We believe that skateboarding, our strategic aspirations and the projects we aim to develop and deliver, align to the government’s Sporting Future strategy as well as Sport England’s Towards an Active Nation strategy. The sport has the potential to engage those
who are not into traditional sports into physical activity. It has low barriers to entry and creates positive exercise and lifestyle habits. It is also inclusive of disadvantaged or minority groups.
