sustainability

The project has followed the government’s

‘soft landings’ requirements in terms of energy reporting, which will cover the first two years of trading, says Prendergast. “Energy use is linked to revenue income and

the building will be analysed over the first two years to monitor the estimated energy predictions, which is expected to demonstrate a 25 per cent betterment over current building regulations; as well as a significant reduction in CO2 emissions between the old facility and the new leisure facility power and heat requirements.”

inclusive design “Riverside Leisure Centre has been carefully designed to provide access to the widest

possible cross-section of the community, improving access for elderly people and people with disabilities, in order to ensure an accessible attraction that is suitable for all. A high-quality design will help to encourage the community to enjoy health and fitness and increase participation,” explains Prendergast. Features include:

• Extra wide accessible parking bays • Both entrances and exits are at ground floor level, with ramp access

• The reception desk is open with a low-level area, making it accessible for wheelchair access

• The centre has level floors throughout, with two lifts: one giving access to the ice rink area and the second providing access to the gym,

studios, meeting rooms and pool spectator platform

• All barriers have wide entry access and low- level touch points for easy access when tapping in and out

• Doorways are extra-wide to help with customer flow

• All signage around the centre has been produced with accessibility in mind

• A hearing loop is in operation • Assistance animals are allowed in the centre • Accessible ground floor pool changing, with an accessible changing room, as well as a ‘changing places’ unit

• Male and female dry changing rooms are located on the first floor – they each have spacious changing areas with benches. There is another ‘changing places’ unit on this floor

• Large, lower level lockers are also available • There are six accessible toilets throughout the centre – three on the ground floor and three on the first floor

• A submersible platform and pool hoist to provide access to the deck-level main pool

• A hoist to allow access to the learner pool, as well as a sloped entry splash zone

• The teaching pool incorporates a range of sensory features, which will enable sessions aimed at people with physical and learning disabilities
