(local authorities and private investors) who would like to enter into joint ventures with the LTA to deliver their vision of Tennis Opened Up through targeted investment in indoor and park tennis facilities,” says Stewart. “We are working with our field team to

engage at local level and I am working on creating a national network of leisure providers who have great working relationships with local authorities.” The LTA has £125m to invest on an interest-free basis in new and existing indoor tennis facilities.

“We are not adopting the role of developer

but will work with partners such as local authorities and private investors to jointly fund schemes on a 50/50 basis. Payment terms to repay a loan will typically be 10 years, although in exceptional circumstances a longer term (up to 15 years) might be considered,” says Stewart. The new facilities being developed will add

to the current total of more than 1,400 indoor courts at over 300 venues across the country, including the existing network of community indoor tennis centres supported by the LTA, commercial clubs and tennis club venues.

“The models currently specified assume four (possibly up to six) indoor courts linked to a gym, exercise studio, padel tennis facilities and a café, but we will be flexible on facility mix depending on location and scale of the opportunity,” says Stewart. “These centres will be community focused

and the pricing of all facilities and programmes will be based on other local community

facilities. A junior tennis programme will run from the centres along with community based programmes including schools. Due to the mix of facilities in the new centres we will very much be working with the operators to establish sporting programmes to get more children more active, more often.”
