Sustainability Waste Management Sustainability
Sustainability within the waste industry has never been more important. This is due to the recent growing public awareness of the relationship between how we process our waste and the devastating impact that this has on the environment. Recently, there has been a shift toward innovative food recycling due to economic and environmental drivers but also through policy.
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2014 requires Scottish businesses that produce more than
5kg of food waste a week to segregate their food waste from general waste. The Welsh government is expected to follow suit in April 2023, requiring all businesses in Wales to legally segregate out their food waste. It is expected that the UK government will follow suit in the coming years with a similarly progressive policy applicable to all English businesses(1)
.
These regulations mean that businesses now have far greater options available to them
when recycling their food waste. Animal by- product (ABP) waste has historically been dominated by a couple of big players in the market. However, greater competition in this sector is leading to better pricing. This is adding strength to the economic argument for English butchers, before policy changes require them to recycle food waste by law. With food waste being the main culprit for heavy general waste bins, recycling your unwanted food waste is cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
In terms of environmental reasons, 130kWh of green gas is generated for every 240L (domestic size) food bin recycled. This means that large butchers could power a

home with green gas for a whole year, simply by having two food bins collected weekly, as this would generate 13,000kWh of green gas. If this food waste is not recycled, it would most likely end up in the atmosphere as methane, an even more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
These factors add further reasons for butchers to look at how they recycle their waste. The importance of how butchers recycle their food waste has never been more apparent.
