New Deli counter qualification launched
Food specialist awarding and end-point assessment organisation FDQ have recently announced the launch of a brand-new Deli qualification - the FDQ Level 2 Certificate in Delicatessen Counter Sales and Service.
Developed in collaboration with Waitrose, the qualification is designed for any retailers with delicatessen counters. In addition to Delis, butchers, farm shops, and food halls may also find this qualification useful. It is a standalone qualification but can be delivered as part of an apprenticeship.
Delivered and assessed in the workplace, the content is based around three delicatessen categories: cheese, charcuterie, and other specialist deli products - such as marinated vegetables, olives, and specialist pastry products. Units focus on the principles of the three categories; understanding how to operate the counters as well as customer service, product sampling, and how to maximise sales.
Deli products such as continental meats have seen significant growth over the last two years, which bodes well for businesses with deli-counters. This is partly due to the rise in in-home entertaining, and also to the increased number of in-home lunches, which according to AHDB remains at elevated levels versus pre-Covid.

The qualification is regulated by Ofqual and currently available in England only, though FDQ could potentially seek approval in Northern Ireland and Wales subject to expressions of interest. Currently, registration and certification fees for this qualification are set at £114.50. Contact
fdq@FDQ.org.uk for more information.
