Summary of National Craft Butchers Annual General Meeting

On 22nd June National Craft Butchers NCB) held their Annual General Meeting (AGM), via Zoom.

Thank you to all the members who took the time to join the meeting and share their views on the day. Whilst this year marked NCB’s third virtual AGM, there are in plans to return to a physical AGM in 2023 and the team look forward very much to seeing NCB members in person again.

President George Debman opened the meeting at 2.30pm welcoming members from across England and Wales.

In accordance with previous practice the Executive Council approved minutes of the June 2021 AGM were adopted, together with the Statements of Accounts, Balance sheet and 2021 Executive Council Annual Report, previously circulated to members registered to attend.

During the presentation of the annual report the success of the British Butchers Survey was highlighted. The survey generated over 200 responses and gave the NCB team useful insights. The continued Covid response from NCB during 2021 was also praised. Natasha’s Law came into force last October. This piece of legislation possibly caused one of the most significant impacts on members businesses in 2021, bringing with it more stringent rules for product labelling. In addition to providing substantial coverage in Craft Butcher magazine the NCB head office team also produced a ‘Guide to Natasha’s Law’ and hosted an Allergens Webinar back in September. NCB’s work in representing Small Abattoirs continued with the creation of the Abattoir Sector Group in early 2021, bringing together various industry partners to raise the issues with both FSA and DEFRA.

Executive Council Officers approved (as previously agreed by the Executive) for the 2022-2023 term are: President George Debman, President Elect David Gigli, Treasurer Craig Thomas, and Immediate Past President John Mettrick.

Nominations for the Executive Council 2022-2023 closed on 31st

May 2022.

The members appointed are: George Debman, David Gigli, John Mettrick,

Richard Douglas, Frank Taylor, Sarah Jane Trueman, and Craig Thomas. Also welcomed were new Executive Council members, Sam Papworth from Norfolk, and Stephen Hill from Stafford. The expertise they offer will be a great asset to NCB and its members.

John Taylor MBE and William Lloyd Williams MBE stand down from the NCB Executive Council this year. Both will be greatly missed at our meetings and within the industry. They were thanked by President George Debman on behalf of the organisation for their passion, commitment and long service to National Craft Butchers and the industry as a whole. John served on the executive for 34 years, including both a term as National President in 2010 and terms as Treasurer. Wil served on the Executive for 17 years with a term as President in 2007 and as Policy Director since, providing invaluable representation for small abattoirs. At the request of the executive, NCB paid tribute to their long service by awarding each of them an Life Honorary Vice Presidency of National Craft Butchers.

The President’s address thanked NCB Head office for their hard work and support over the past year and touched on some of this year’s work and the plans for the next year. Since last year Sarah Davison (Membership Manager) and Georgina Bailey (Office Manager) have joined the team. NCB Technical Manager, Richard Stevenson, has semi-retired. National Craft Butchers now have a new website with added features for NCB members. These include a new and improved members area plus the ‘Find a Craft Butcher’ interactive map to help customers find a craft butcher close to where they live. Over the next year NCB will be updating their Primary

Authority Food Hygiene Assured Advice, adding Health & Safety Assured Advice and hopefully forming a new coordinated partnership to provide Trading Standards Assured Advice to members.
