Achievements of the Society of Marime Industries

The Society of Marime Industries (SMI) has connued to provide a wide range of acvies both internaonally and in the UK during the last year for the benefit of the marime engineering business community. Our members’ wide ranging interests are reflected through six areas of business each advised on policy by a Council of members experienced in those business areas:

The Offshore Industries Group represented by the OIG Council

The Marine Science and Technology Group represented by the MSTG Council

The Commercial Shipbuilding Group represented by the BMEA Council (future name sll under review)

The Marime Defence & Security Group represented by the MDSG Council

The Marime Autonomous Systems Group represented by the MASG Council

The Ports and Terminals Group represented by the PTG Council

By organising ourselves in this way SMI connues to ensure it seeks out business opportunies which meet the needs of its members across a broad range of markets in the marime industries. Our acvies follow our objecves of presenng members with business opportunies, assisng with research and innovaon, lobbying government and NGOs to improve the business environment, facilitang network opportunies and providing markeng and other services.

Business Overseas and in the UK

SMI has supported companies at ten internaonal trade fairs overseas and two in the UK during the last year. The overseas trade fairs took place across the world in Abu Dhabi, Australia, China (twice), Norway, Singapore, South Korea, The Netherlands, USA and Vietnam. Most of these trade fairs were supported by grants from the Department for Internaonal Trade in our capacity as an accredited Trade Challenge Partner. This is an important part of our support for companies wishing to seek visibility in those markets which offer good prospects for future business.

During the year we have hosted a number of inward trade missions and engaged with Brish overseas embassies and consulates to ensure they are aware of UK capability in the marime sector.

We have arranged a series of seminars on technical and business opportunity related subjects to keep our members and the wider industry fully informed. Many companies report that they gain valuable insight as a result of these meengs which are an extremely cost effecve way to learn of new opportunies.

Our web portal connues to generate a large monthly traffic parcularly for our highly funconal ‘Product Search’ secon. Members benefit from being able to display their capabilies on a web portal which is updated every day and therefore maintains its visibility to search engines. The enhanced ‘Member Zone’ provides the SMI membership with exclusive informaon on markets, presentaons from seminars and key news to assist in the running of their business.
