Marime UK Update

future labour needs of the sector, including gaps that industry and government must address together.

2018 is the Year of Engineering, and the marime sector is determined to play its part in promong the vast number of engineering opportunies across all industries.

Apprenceships have been the buzz word of recent mes, and the sector connues to develop new apprenceship standards and encourage their adopon. During Shipping Week we launched a joint Marime UK – DfT employer resource ‘Marime Apprenceships: Your Future, Their Future, Our Future’, including common misconcepons, FAQs and case studies.

Mainstream media coverage means that the public and their representave decision‐makers are hearing the marime sector’s priories, alongside other sectors with more established public affairs records.

Promong the UK’s marime offer

SMI members are featured in a number of Marime UK promoonal products, which can be seen on the website. The products connue to be districted to target market diplomac posts, and at trade shows and missions.

Shipping Week brought thousands of global industry leaders to the UK and we worked with government to organise an impressive array of 1‐2‐1’s and roundtables – linking customers with the relevant UK suppliers. We organised the first Internaonal Marime Xchange at Somerset House, which brought together predominately Chinese visitors with UK marime companies from across the sector. This is a model likely to be repeated.

We organised the first pan‐sector trade mission with DIT to Shanghai, which saw the enre UK marime offer being presented to Chinese customers. Making use of the sector’s armoury, the mission was focused aboard the QM2, herself on an East Asian tour.

2018 seeks the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeng come to London, and we’re working with members and government to ensure we make the most of this high‐profile opportunity to promote the UK’s products, services and investment opportunies.

Work connues to scope opportunies for the enre sector, with a great deal of focus on the opportunies to be found within India’s Sagar Mala project.

Skills and careers

Career opportunies in the marime sector are as broad as they are excing. We have developed a pan‐sector marime careers portal to serve as a shop window for those careers: www.marimeuk.org/careers.

Members are developing a skills strategy that will idenfy the 22 Society of Marime Industries Handbook & Members’ Directory 2018

Just as we work to get more apprences, we are commied to geng more women in the sector, and an acon plan comprising praccal and robust steps will be produced to aid delivery.

Regional cluster development

There is much interest in regional clusters at the moment, and we have a programme of regional cluster development, being led by SMI member Mersey Marime. The cluster development programme will have two key elements, focused on both bringing together exisng cluster organisaons and establishing new organisaons as vehicles of marime growth.

By being brought together clusters will be able to share best pracce and consider any regulatory or policy asks that uniquely affect their role within the marime sector.

The second key pillar of the programme will be the creaon of a ‘service’ that is available for regions across the UK to support the creaon and later development of new cluster organisaons. The service will be based upon the experience and model developed by the exisng cluster organisaons.

Such a programme of new cluster creaon and development will support Marime UK’s ambion to deliver jobs and growth across the whole country.
