Marime UK Update
future labour needs of the sector, including gaps that industry and government must address together.
2018 is the Year of Engineering, and the marime sector is determined to play its part in promong the vast number of engineering opportunies across all industries.
Apprenceships have been the buzz word of recent mes, and the sector connues to develop new apprenceship standards and encourage their adopon. During Shipping Week we launched a joint Marime UK – DfT employer resource ‘Marime Apprenceships: Your Future, Their Future, Our Future’, including common misconcepons, FAQs and case studies.
Mainstream media coverage means that the public and their representave decision‐makers are hearing the marime sector’s priories, alongside other sectors with more established public affairs records.
Promong the UK’s marime offer
SMI members are featured in a number of Marime UK promoonal products, which can be seen on the website. The products connue to be districted to target market diplomac posts, and at trade shows and missions.
Shipping Week brought thousands of global industry leaders to the UK and we worked with government to organise an impressive array of 1‐2‐1’s and roundtables – linking customers with the relevant UK suppliers. We organised the first Internaonal Marime Xchange at Somerset House, which brought together predominately Chinese visitors with UK marime companies from across the sector. This is a model likely to be repeated.
We organised the first pan‐sector trade mission with DIT to Shanghai, which saw the enre UK marime offer being presented to Chinese customers. Making use of the sector’s armoury, the mission was focused aboard the QM2, herself on an East Asian tour.
2018 seeks the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeng come to London, and we’re working with members and government to ensure we make the most of this high‐profile opportunity to promote the UK’s products, services and investment opportunies.
Work connues to scope opportunies for the enre sector, with a great deal of focus on the opportunies to be found within India’s Sagar Mala project.
Skills and careers
Career opportunies in the marime sector are as broad as they are excing. We have developed a pan‐sector marime careers portal to serve as a shop window for those careers:
www.mari
meuk.org/careers.
Members are developing a skills strategy that will idenfy the 22 Society of Marime Industries Handbook & Members’ Directory 2018
Just as we work to get more apprences, we are commied to geng more women in the sector, and an acon plan comprising praccal and robust steps will be produced to aid delivery.
Regional cluster development
There is much interest in regional clusters at the moment, and we have a programme of regional cluster development, being led by SMI member Mersey Marime. The cluster development programme will have two key elements, focused on both bringing together exisng cluster organisaons and establishing new organisaons as vehicles of marime growth.
By being brought together clusters will be able to share best pracce and consider any regulatory or policy asks that uniquely affect their role within the marime sector.
The second key pillar of the programme will be the creaon of a ‘service’ that is available for regions across the UK to support the creaon and later development of new cluster organisaons. The service will be based upon the experience and model developed by the exisng cluster organisaons.
Such a programme of new cluster creaon and development will support Marime UK’s ambion to deliver jobs and growth across the whole country.
