Members who exhibit at the biennial ocean technology exhibion, Ocean Business, are able to take advantage of a special SMI rate. This hands‐on exhibion and training forum has carved out a major slot in the internaonal trade show calendar and SMI is proud to have been a partner with Diversified Communicaons UK in this show since its incepon 10 years ago.

Board since 1993, also rered at the AGM. SMI wishes to place on record its appreciaon for the considerable contribuon made by Peter and Duncan in the development of the associaon.
A regular and valuable source of contact between members across all of SMI’s interest groups is the member only discussion meengs arranged in our boardroom. These are held with invited speakers around a parcular business topic and generate opportunies for members to develop informal business collaboraons. As these events are not on our open calendar they are the ‘hidden’ benefit of being a member of SMI.
Members’ Services
Members are able to enjoy the free use of the 20 seat board room in the SMI’s headquarters, which is in a presgious locaon in the heart of the City of London. Whether it is meeng clients from other parts of the UK or overseas or bringing together personnel from around the UK, our facility is ideal and has been well used during the year.
Our web portal connues to be at the core of the informaon stream we provide for our members, who are also able to have their news releases and newsleers published on the web site thereby increasing their footprint on the internet. The team of experts within SMI are also a valuable source of informaon for companies wishing to explore new markets or find their way through the labyrinthine process of selling into the domesc defence business!
Our seminar programme has covered topics such as “Accessing business opportunies in the naval programmes of Australia”, “Reducing the costs for the offshore wind energy sector”, “Monitoring microplascs in the oceans”, “Quantum technologies in the marine sector”, “Cyber security in ports”, “Ports and

SMI relies on the acve support of its members in a variety of capacies which ensures we connue to meet the needs of the industry. Through SMI’s Board of Directors and Councils, 106 members are involved with the running of SMI and seng its policy agenda. Following elecons we welcomed no less than 15 new members to serve on the Board and the Councils ensuring that a broad cross secon of the membership contributes to our work and provides a valuable resource for new ideas.
SMI runs two awards each year funded by a trust fund set up in memory of Mr Donald Maxwell, the founder director‐general of SMI’s predecessor organisaon, BMEC. In 2017 the AMSI Council Business Person of the Year Award was presented to Dr Michael Osborne, Managing Director of OceanWise Limited. The Student Award went to Joseph Marn who is studying for a Bachelor Degree of Engineering in Marine Technology with Naval Architecture, School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle University, for his paper “Air Flow Over Commercial Vessel Super‐Structures with Respect To [Emergency] Air‐Sea Operaons” and was presented to him by SMI’s Chairman at the AGM Luncheon.
