tasked with being the industry umbrella organisaon envisaged in the government’s Marime Growth Strategy which was launched in 2015.
London Internaonal Shipping Week (LISW) was the focus for a wide range of policy iniaves which commenced with a roundtable discussion at No 10 Downing Street aended by ministers from across Whitehall and a number of SMI Board members. This enabled the industry’s concerns to be raised with the highest level in government.

Members have also been able to avail themselves of the services of our resident manager in Shanghai, whose valuable contacts can ensure that their products and services are channelled to the right procurement personnel. A number of member companies have now benefited from this service in a variety of sectors in this important market.
SMI was delighted to be one of the organising associaons for London Internaonal Shipping Week 2017 (LISW). The third in the series aracted a large internaonal audience and the main conference focus on Tomorrow’s Marime World discussed the emerging trend of autonomy in shipping operaons, a topic of major importance to SMI members. During LISW the Department for Internaonal Trade in associaon with Marime UK staged the first Internaonal Marime Xchange which was chaired by the SMI Chief Execuve. At this event internaonal visitors were able to learn of the excellent UK capabilies in the marime sector through a series of workshops and one‐to‐one meengs.
Improving the Business Environment
The last year has seen a significant interest from the UK government in supporng the producve industries with the launch of an industrial Strategy. An important pre‐cursor to this White Paper was the Naonal Shipbuilding Strategy (NSBS) seng out a 30 year programme for naval shipbuilding in the UK. Importantly the NSBS announced the formaon of a Marime Enterprise Working Group led by industry and supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and SMI, the only trade associaon menoned in the document. The Chair of this group is Peter French, former chairman of the SMI Board, who has let it be known that its remit will extend beyond purely those ships procured by the Ministry of Defence.
SMI is a leading member of Marime UK which brings together the UK's shipping, ports, marime engineering and business services sectors. Marime UK has an expanded role to drive forward an ambious agenda for growth, to promote the UK as a world‐class marime centre and to unite the marime community in meeng the challenges of tomorrow. Through its membership of Marime UK, SMI and its members parcipate in a number of its working groups. Furthermore, Mr Russell Gould (Kelvin Hughes) is Chair of the Export & Investment Group and SMI’s Chief Execuve is Chair of the Technology & Innovaon Group and Vice‐Chair of the Policy Group.
The above engagement ensures SMI plays a key role in represenng to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the business interests of members and we maintain a leading posion on a variety of fronts. The SMI Chief Execuve is also a member of the cross‐Whitehall Marime Strategy Commiee, chaired by the Department for Transport (DfT), which overseas many of the recommendaons in the Marime Growth Strategy. In addion to our engagement with BEIS and DfT, a number of members parcipate in the Marine Industries Liaison Group of the Marine Science Coordinaon Commiee (MSCC) in the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and SMI’s Chief Execuve also sits on the MSCC Internaonal Working Group. SMI maintains links with the House of Commons through its Honorary Vice Presidents: Mr Jim Fitzpatrick (Labour) and Ms Carol Monaghan (Scosh Naonalist Party). We are grateful to them for their assistance and interest in our affairs throughout the year. These links enable us to ensure we have access to all levels of government and parliament.
