tasked with being the industry umbrella organisaon envisaged in the government’s Marime Growth Strategy which was launched in 2015.

London Internaonal Shipping Week (LISW) was the focus for a wide range of policy iniaves which commenced with a roundtable discussion at No 10 Downing Street aended by ministers from across Whitehall and a number of SMI Board members. This enabled the industry’s concerns to be raised with the highest level in government.

Members have also been able to avail themselves of the services of our resident manager in Shanghai, whose valuable contacts can ensure that their products and services are channelled to the right procurement personnel. A number of member companies have now benefited from this service in a variety of sectors in this important market.

SMI was delighted to be one of the organising associaons for London Internaonal Shipping Week 2017 (LISW). The third in the series aracted a large internaonal audience and the main conference focus on Tomorrow’s Marime World discussed the emerging trend of autonomy in shipping operaons, a topic of major importance to SMI members. During LISW the Department for Internaonal Trade in associaon with Marime UK staged the first Internaonal Marime Xchange which was chaired by the SMI Chief Execuve. At this event internaonal visitors were able to learn of the excellent UK capabilies in the marime sector through a series of workshops and one‐to‐one meengs.

Improving the Business Environment

The last year has seen a significant interest from the UK government in supporng the producve industries with the launch of an industrial Strategy. An important pre‐cursor to this White Paper was the Naonal Shipbuilding Strategy (NSBS) seng out a 30 year programme for naval shipbuilding in the UK. Importantly the NSBS announced the formaon of a Marime Enterprise Working Group led by industry and supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and SMI, the only trade associaon menoned in the document. The Chair of this group is Peter French, former chairman of the SMI Board, who has let it be known that its remit will extend beyond purely those ships procured by the Ministry of Defence.

SMI is a leading member of Marime UK which brings together the UK's shipping, ports, marime engineering and business services sectors. Marime UK has an expanded role to drive forward an ambious agenda for growth, to promote the UK as a world‐class marime centre and to unite the marime community in meeng the challenges of tomorrow. Through its membership of Marime UK, SMI and its members parcipate in a number of its working groups. Furthermore, Mr Russell Gould (Kelvin Hughes) is Chair of the Export & Investment Group and SMI’s Chief Execuve is Chair of the Technology & Innovaon Group and Vice‐Chair of the Policy Group.

The above engagement ensures SMI plays a key role in represenng to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) the business interests of members and we maintain a leading posion on a variety of fronts. The SMI Chief Execuve is also a member of the cross‐Whitehall Marime Strategy Commiee, chaired by the Department for Transport (DfT), which overseas many of the recommendaons in the Marime Growth Strategy. In addion to our engagement with BEIS and DfT, a number of members parcipate in the Marine Industries Liaison Group of the Marine Science Coordinaon Commiee (MSCC) in the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and SMI’s Chief Execuve also sits on the MSCC Internaonal Working Group. SMI maintains links with the House of Commons through its Honorary Vice Presidents: Mr Jim Fitzpatrick (Labour) and Ms Carol Monaghan (Scosh Naonalist Party). We are grateful to them for their assistance and interest in our affairs throughout the year. These links enable us to ensure we have access to all levels of government and parliament.
