President’s introducon Archie Bethel CBE

The annual handbook and members’ directory provides an opportunity to review the achievements of the Society (SMI) and also to inform our members’ customers about the industry renowned capabilies which exist within the UK and are widely sought throughout the world. As the leading trade associaon for companies in manufacturing, support and associated services for the marime engineering industries, we strive to help those companies

seeking new business and contacts for their development.

On the policy front 2017 has been a busy year for the sector. The long awaited Naonal Shipbuilding Strategy (NSBS) finally saw the light of day and the significance of SMI’s input to the consultaon was reflected in the fact that SMI was the only trade associaon named in the document. Our role will be to support the industry led Marime Enterprise Working Group in associaon with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

It was significant that the Ministry of Defence had decided to accept most of the recommendaons from Sir John Parker’s independent report on a strategy for shipbuilding, published at the end of 2016, and this poses a challenge for government and industry alike to ensure that the NSBS can be implemented for the benefit of the whole sector.

Therefore, it will be an interesng year ahead as we connue to campaign on aspects of the NSBS where we believe more can be done to enhance the business opportunies for the sector across the whole supply chain both in the UK and as a driver for exports.

In an indicaon of SMI’s increasing standing with policymakers, I was delighted to join a number of the SMI Board at a marime roundtable discussion at No 10 Downing Street at the start of London Internaonal Shipping Week (LISW) aended by ministers from five government departments. To have the opportunity of

speaking directly with the government of the day on maers of concern to our industry is essenal in the broader picture of emphasising our sector’s importance to the UK economy.

A fact which was underlined by the recent figures from Marime UK, published in me for LISW, which showed that the whole of the marime sector supports a Gross Value Added of over £37 billion and employment of nearly one million. A truly impressive amount.

Looking into 2018, the publicaon of the government’s Future of the Sea report is awaited with interest. This major piece of work aims to provide a picture of how the UK can derive economic and social benefit from the ocean economy over the next couple of decades and how government can influence the outcomes. That SMI has been a member of the small expert team reviewing the report is a further example of our status.

We could not achieve so much without the tremendous support of those members prepared to serve on the Society’s Board and Councils working in tandem with a dedicated staff focussed on meeng our members’ requirements and I pay tribute to their commitment.

As you read this Directory I am certain you will realise that a sector’s trade associaon is an essenal resource for any company in its influence over policymakers and in the services and advice it can give to guide a company in its business development. If you are a UK company operang in the marime engineering sector, I encourage you to join the Society of Marime Industries so that you too can gain that compeve advantage!
