match the levels achieved a year previously, dropping 700 tonnes or 1.3 per cent to 54,700 tonnes. However, thanks to strong first quarter performance, the year to date total surpassed 2017’s output at this stage, reaching 112,800 tonnes, an increase of 1,500 tonnes or 1.4 per cent. Furthermore, 2018 pig feed production for the first half of the year passed the 10 year average for the period by a considerable 24,900 tonnes or 28.3 per cent. A record second quarter was seen in the poultry feed sector with
production reaching 219,100 tonnes, 15,400 tonnes or 7.6 per cent more than was amassed in the same time frame last year. The 10 year average for Q2 was also bettered by 34,700 tonnes or 18.8 per cent. Furthermore, there was record high for the half of the year, with production passing the 400,000 tonne mark for the first time, rising by 7.4 per cent from year earlier levels to 429,100 tonnes Even though sheep feed output in Q2 managed to significantly
outpace comparative production in 2017, increasing by 2,500 tonnes or 17.5 per cent to 16,800 tonnes, it only managed to slightly outperform the 10 year average by 100 tonnes or 0.6 per cent. The year to date production levels for sheep feed are the joint second highest on record,

falling only behind the exceptional year of 2013. However, output in the first six months of 2018 did exceed both the year earlier total and the 10 year mean, standing 6,700 tonne or 15.4 per cent and 1,800 tonnes or 3.7 per cent above them respectively. Other feed production, April through June, was the only sector to
fall behind both the earlier total and the 10 year average for Q2. There was a 900 tonnes or 5.1 per cent drop from 2017 levels to 16,900 tonnes, a figure that sits 400 tonnes or 2.3 per cent below the 10 year average of production. Contrastingly, thanks to a strong first three months of the year, the year to date output surpassed both 2017 production and the 10 year mean. At 41,800 tonnes this was both 1,200 tonnes or 3.0 per cent above year previous levels and 500 tonnes or 1.2 per cent over the average of 10 years. Despite a fall from year previous levels in both pig and other feed
production, a record level of feed was produced during the second quarter of 2018. Additionally, each of the individual sectors production for the year so far managed to surpass the respective totals for 2017, resulting in a record for the year to date and putting 2018 firmly on course to be the highest year of production recorded in Northern Ireland.
