NORTHERN IRELAND June Production Update Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates during June 2018 amounted to 190,600 tonnes, the highest total achieved in the month, surpassing the previous record set a year earlier by 1,100 tonnes or 0.6 per cent. Furthermore, the 2018 total for June was 28,300 tonnes or 17.4 per cent higher than the 10 year average for the month in question. Total feed production during the month of June 2018 was made up
of: 45.5 per cent cattle and calf feed, 39.3 per cent poultry feed, 10.6 per cent pig feed, 2.9 per cent other feed and 1.7 per cent sheep feed. Total cattle and calf feed production also reached record levels for
the period, with 2018 output increasing to 86,800 tonnes, 1,400 tonnes or 1.6 per cent more than year earlier levels. Additionally, the current June’s production was 9,600 tonnes or 12.4 per cent greater than the 10 year average for the month under review. There was a distinct split between blend and compound production
during June. It was a spell of growth for blends, with production of beef coarse mixes and blends and dairy coarse mixes and blends both growing to the same total of 14,200 tonnes, increasing by 1,900 tonnes or 15.5 per cent and 1,000 tonnes or 7.6 per cent respectively, from the 12,300 tonnes and 13,200 tonnes obtained a year previously. However, notwithstanding dairy cow compounds remaining static at 45,100 tonnes, compound production slipped from year earlier levels. Other calf compounds dropped by 500 tonnes or 10.2 per cent to 4,400 tonnes, while beef cattle compounds fell 1,000 tonnes or 10.5 per cent to 8,500 tonnes. Despite pig feed production for June 2018 not being able to match
the record outputs reported in the late 90’s, it did outperform year previous production by 600 tonnes or 3.1 per cent, with 20,200 tonnes amassed during the month. The 10 year average for June of 14,400 tonnes was also significantly exceeded by 5,800 tonnes or 40.3 per cent. There was little movement from 2017 levels across all the sectors
of pig feed. Only pig finishing feeds, at 8,600 tonnes, fell short of their year earlier total and even then only by 100 tonnes or 1.2 per cent; pig starter and creep feed and pig breeding feed both matched their year earlier outputs of 1,700 tonnes and 3,200 tonnes. Pig growing feed was the only real mover, up 600 tonnes or 16.7 per cent to 4,200 tonnes. At 74,900 tonnes, June 2018 poultry feed production could not
better the unprecedented 2017 total which had bested the previous record by 8,300 tonnes or 12.4 per cent. However, it came close to replicating it, falling short of the year previous total by just 300 tonnes or 0.4 per cent. 2018’s June production also stood 12,300 tonnes or 19.7 per cent above the 10 year average for the period under review, further highlighting the disparity between 2017/18 and the years preceding them. In spite of the overall drop in output from the previous year, chick
rearing feed grew considerably, up 500 tonnes or 22.7 per cent from its 2017 June total, to 2,700 tonnes. Turkey and other poultry feed production also increased marginally to 3,300 tonnes from 3,100 tonnes, a 200 tonnes or 6.5 per cent growth. However, these upturns were overshadowed by the 700 tonnes or 2.7 per cent drop in layer and breeder feed to 24,900 tonnes and the 400 tonnes or 0.9 per cent fall in broiler feed to 43,900 tonnes.
PAGE 8 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 FEED COMPOUNDER
Total sheep feed production for the month fell below both the
year earlier total and the 10 year average for the month, the two figures being identical at 3,500 tonnes. 2018 June production only amounted to 3,300 tonnes, a 200 tonnes or 5.7 per cent shortfall by comparison. It is worth noting that the 10 year average is skewed by the exceptional total recorded in the June of 2009, which has so far not come close to being matched. A 100 tonnes or 6.7 per cent rise in growing and finishing sheep
compounds, to 1,600 tonnes was offset by an identical 100 tonnes or 9.1 per cent drop from year earlier levels in breeding sheep compounds, which fell to 1,000 tonnes. Additionally coarse mixes and blends decreased from 2017’s output to 700 tonnes, a 200 tonnes or 22.2 per cent decline. Other feed production also failed to reach year earlier output, the
5,500 tonnes produced in the month fell, 400 tonnes or 6.8 per cent below June 2017 levels. However, June 2018 did significantly outperform the 10 year average for the period by 800 tonnes or 17.0 per cent. Whilst June 2017’s total production was only improved upon by 0.6
per cent, 2018’s total was nevertheless a record high for the month. There were no major upturns or downturns within any of the sectors and only sheep feed fell below the 10 year average of production.
The release of the June figures allow us to analyse the trends displayed by the Northern Irish feed industry which are discussed below.
Quarter Two and Year to Date Figures Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates during the second quarter reached record levels for the time frame, increasing by 49,800 tonnes or 8.7 per cent from the year earlier total, to 620,400 tonnes. Additionally 2018’s Q2 production eclipsed the 10 year average for the period by 85,800 tonnes or 16.1 per cent. This brought the year to date total production of compounds blends
and concentrates to 1,335,300 tonnes, a record high for the first half of the year and 107,300 tonnes or 8.7 per cent greater than the total output at this stage a year earlier. 2018’s production also came in at 184,900 tonnes or 16.1 per cent higher than the 10 year average for total feed production over the first half of the calendar year. Total feed production during quarter two was made up of: 50.4 per
cent cattle and calf feed, 35.3 per cent poultry feed, 8.8 per cent pig feed, 2.7 per cent other feed and 2.7 per cent sheep feed. Total feed production during the year to date was made up of: 52.5
per cent cattle and calf feed, 32.1 per cent poultry feed, 8.5 per cent pig feed, 3.7 per cent sheep feed and 3.1 per cent other feed. Second quarter cattle and calf feed production amounted to
312,800 tonnes; whilst not a record for the period, 2018’s total did surpass year earlier output by 33,300 tonnes or 11.9 per cent and the 10 year average for the quarter by 40,000 tonnes or 14.7 per cent. Production levels at the halfway point in the calendar year were at record levels. At 701,300 tonnes, the year to date total stands 68,500 or 10.8 per above the levels achieved at this point in 2017 and 90,900 tonnes or 14.9 per cent over the 10 year average for the first six months of the calendar year. While, pig feed production in Q2 did outpace the 10 year average for the period by 11,400 tonnes or 26.3 per cent, it could not
