HARPERS FEEDS COMMITS TO THE NEXT GENERATION BY JOINING THE 5% CLUB Harpers Feeds has showcased its commitment to the next generation by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students. The aim of the campaign is to tackle both the chronic skills shortage and youth unemployment in Britain and help the country remain at the forefront of innovation. Harpers Feeds is a well-respected employer in the Holsworthy,
North Devon area, with over 75 staff who already invest heavily in the training and development of their staff. Tina Collins, Finance & HR Manager explained “We have people queuing up to join us as a Company but often find they are lacking the type of skills we require as a business. Previously we have employed University graduates in our sales team and then developed their commercial skills through an on- site programme working alongside experienced Feed Specialists and Nutritionists. The new Apprenticeship Levy has given us an opportunity to re-think our attitude to apprenticeships”.

“For the first time ever, we have recruited a young person to
join us as Business Administration Apprenticeship. Ellie Martyn, age 16, will attend Petroc College, Barnstaple one day a work for formal study and will work four days a week with us covering all aspects of the business as an Office Junior”. “We have also had to look carefully at how we can fill our skills
gaps, in particular LGV Drivers as there is a National shortage which is only predicted to worsen. As a result, we have just enrolled two of our Mill workers, Gareth Johnson & Alex Bayley, on an LGV driver apprenticeship with TransPlant Mastertrain of Exeter in conjunction with Exeter College so that we can home-grow our own drivers. Again if this is successful, it an area we are keen to develop”.
