EVONIK DEVELOPS SYSTEM SOLUTIONS FOR THE GUT HEALTH
OF POULTRY AND SWINE Evonik has developed science-based system solutions for the gut health of broiler chickens, laying hens and weaned to growing-finishing pigs. This integrated approach makes it possible to keep animals healthy without the use of antibiotics, and to produce meat and eggs in a sustainable and economically profitable manner. Evonik’s new system solutions for gut
health include a tailored combination of its feeding concepts, amino acids, probiotics, services and consulting, depending on the individual needs and challenges of the customer. The approach means the customer receives better economic, animal welfare and sustainability results whatever their circumstances. “The challenges for farmers in
increasing productivity while maintaining healthy animals are manifold and can only be overcome with comprehensive solutions,” says Dr. Torben Madsen, head of the Sustainable Healthy Nutrition product line at Evonik. “Our new gut health system solutions provide the basis for solving those challenges”. The intestinal microbiota, i.e., the
totality of microorganisms in the digestive system, is at the centre of the solution. Maintaining its sensitive balance depends on various factors. Among these, feeding is an important aspect that can stabilize or unbalance the microbiota. Environmental conditions such as heat stress or piglets at weaning from breast milk also impact the microbial balance. Ultimately, antibiotics or pathogens have an immediate effect on the microbiota. As a result, morphological and
functional changes occur in the gut which negatively affect digestion and thus nutrient absorption. This leads to reduced animal growth or even increased mortality. “It is important to understand these
complex gut systems and target them individually with the right solutions,” says Dr. Xu Wang, product manager for Gut Health Solutions at Evonik Animal Nutrition. “Our products and services make a significant contribution to this and we are more than happy to introduce our customers to our system solutions”.
EFFICIENCY KEY TO COST
EFFECTIVE DAIRY DIETS The increased use of palm-based C16 fatty acids in biofuel production, combined with rising shipping costs from the Far East, is putting extreme price pressure on its use as a fat supplement in dairy diets, but efficiency measures can help mitigate cost rises, according to nutritional supplement manufacturer UFAC-UK. Palm-based C16 fat supplements are widely used by UK dairy farmers to support
butterfat production and prevent deductions from the milk cheque. “With rising costs, it is crucial that these
products are used as efficiently as possible,” explains UFAC-UK national sales manager, Nigel Bateson. “Many factors affect the digestibility of
the fat supplement, including the level of feeding and the passage rate through the cow,” he adds. It has been shown by researchers in
both Europe (Borsting et al.,1992) and North America (Lock and de Souza, 2018) that providing a rumen inert source of unsaturated fatty acids improves the digestibility of saturated fat such as C16. In particular, it has been shown that
supplying rumen inert oleic acid (C18:1) has a significant effect on fat micelle formation in the intestine leading to improved fatty acid digestibility. To get the best result from C16 supplementation, it should be combined with rumen inert C18:1. It has also been shown that supplying a
range of fatty acids at intestinal level will not only maximise energy supply to the cow but also optimise fatty acid digestibility and aid NDF digestibility (Lock and de Souza 2020). Supa Cream from UFAC-UK is
a precisely formulated fat supplement derived from highly digestible oils, boosting digestibility of both fatty acids and NDF in order to maximise energy supply to the cow. “By suppling C16:0 to aid butterfat
production, combined with rumen inert C18:1 and glycerine to improve total fatty acid digestibility, NDF digestibility and support cow body condition, we can optimise energy supply,” says Mr Bateson. “The product also contains rumen inert
long chain omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil to improve health and fertility,” he adds. This unique combination of fatty acids
helps meet the energy needs of dairy cows, while supplying the balance of fatty acids required to optimise energy utilisation, butterfat production and health.
