also be selected, for example, the introductory improved grassland soils standard with intermediate improved grassland standard, but an application can only contain one ambition level for each standard. Due to the gradual reduction in BPS payments, farmers are eager to know how the potential payment rates of the SFI pilot will compare to historical support levels. AHDB has recently released analysis of the SFI Pilot standards and payment rates, the key message being that “based on current information, most farmers will not be able to completely offset the loss of Direct Payments with participation in the SFI.” This is not that surprising given that the new schemes were never intended to be a like for like replacement of the Basic Payment Scheme. It is important to note that the SFI is still being developed and learnings from the pilot process and feedback will be factored into the scheme as it is rolled out from 2022 – 2024/25. Defra published the “Agricultural Transition Plan: June 2021
progress update” on 30th June. The document includes plans to open a fund to support an Annual Health and Welfare Review conducted
by a vet to help inform farmers’ work to improve animal health and welfare. The Annual Health and Welfare Review will include diagnostic testing for priority diseases or conditions, and bespoke advice on health, welfare, biosecurity and the responsible use of medicines. Action taken as a result of the Annual Health and Welfare Review will contribute to government commitments on the responsible use of antimicrobials, as set out in the UK Anti-Microbial Resistance 5-year National Action Plan. Several other Defra schemes are due to open this year. Piloting of
other Environmental land management schemes including Local Nature Recovery and Landscape Recovery start in 2022. The Slurry Investment Scheme (to upgrade storage and reduce the risk of pollution) will be open for applications from 2022. Applications for New Prosperity and Productivity funding including the Future Farming Resilience Fund, Farming Investment Fund, Innovation Research and Development scheme and New Entrant Support Scheme open from 2021/22 and farmers await further details of these schemes with interest.
