NHS Bursary to continue in Wales

Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething,

has confirmed the NHS bursary will be extended in Wales for students starting their studies in September 2019. The bursary, for eligible student nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, was scrapped in England in 2017. In Wales, the full bursary package will continue to be available for those who commit in advance to work in Wales for up to two years post qualification. Of the 2180 students applying for the bursary in 2017/18, only 3% declined to work

in Wales post-qualification,

meaning the vast majority of students trained in Wales will work in Wales after their studies. The Health Secretary said: “Health care students

are the future of our NHS,

which is why, unlike in England, we are continuing to support them during their studies in return for a commitment to work in Wales. “This sends a clear message about how much we value our health care workforce and sets out our commitment to the future of our NHS.” Mr Gething added: “As well as a commitment to extending the bursary, we’re investing record levels in our NHS workforce. Since 2014, the number of nurse training places commissioned has increased by 68%. We’re also taking positive action to attract more health professionals from the UK and beyond to come to Wales, to train, work and live.”

Put your thinking caps on for Barnardo’s fundraising Hat Day!

Barnardo’s Cymru is asking teachers, parents and pupils to sign up for Hat Day and wear a fun hat to raise money to support the UK’s most vulnerable children. The charity’s fundraising Hat Day on Friday 18 May encourages children to wear or make a hat signifying who or what they would like to be or do when they grow up. It could be a firefighter, police officer, chef, astronaut, medic or sportsperson. There are no rules or limits to the imagination – they may want to be a wizard or superhero. If a child does not know what they want to be they can decorate their hat with something they are passionate about such as a sport, graffiti art, dancing shoes or musical instrument. The aim is to raise money for the UK’s leading children’s charity to help give thousands of disadvantaged children a better future. When they go into school, playgroup or children’s centre on May 18, parents and carers can make

a voluntary donation of £1 to £2 to Barnardo’s. Sarah Crawley, Director of Barnardo’s Cymru, said: “Children are full of surprises and this is a fun way of allowing their imaginations to run wild in a way that will be inspiring, educational and raise money to help transform the lives of children who desperately need our support.” Those children include young

carers who have caring responsibilities for a parent or sibling, young people who have been abused, the disabled, those at risk of sexual exploitation and young people leaving care. To register visit http:// www.barnardos.org.uk/ hatday. Here you’ll find everything you need to make the event a success at your school, nursery, playgroup or children’s centre. The

resources section has school posters, sample letters for parents and hat-making guides. To help with ideas, Barnardo’s is launching a separate ‘Top Hat’ competition for teachers/ parents for best hat in the run up to Hat Day, with a poll to decide the winner on the Barnardo’s Community Fundraising facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ barnardosfundraising.
