Sully girls football team, can train in all weather

Transform the school run to ease congestion

Sully girls football team make the most of the Welsh weather with new kit.

A SULLY GIRLS football team is celebrating after Tarmac’s Aberthaw Cement Plant has provided a donation which has allowed them to purchase all-weather training gear to ensure that they make the most of the great Welsh weather all-year round. The Under 11’s team, which was established in 2015 and plays in the

South Wales Girls

League, has purchased the waterproof gear so that it can train in all elements. Tarmac has provided the donation to the club as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works. Kara Bennett, Tarmac Aberthaw’s Environ- mental Co-ordinator, explains the partnership: “We

are keen to

support charities and causes located in close proximity to the cement plant and are delighted to have been able to fund much-needed equipment so that the

girls can train in all weather. “We are hoping that the relationship will also allow us to engage with the club to open young girls minds to the opportunities that exist within the engineering sector. We are running a pilot

programme -

Women in Cement – which gives young women the opportunity to understand what it’s like to work within the industry and support them with the skills needed to forge a successful career. “We hope that the kit donation is just the start of a fruitful relationship and we wish the girls the best of luck for the remainder of the season.” Mark Isherwood coaches Sully Girls Under 11’s and said: “We are delighted to have established these links with Tarmac and it’s great that they have been able to have provided much needed support. We are reliant on such donations to keep the club running

and we are excited about the possibilities this relationship holds.” Aberthaw Cement Plant is the only cement works in south Wales. Cement made at Aberthaw has contributed to some of Wales’ most signifi cant construction projects of recent time, including Pembroke Power Station, The Millennium Centre and home of the Welsh Government - The Senedd, both in Cardiff Bay. SCHOOL RUN traffi c contributes to almost a quarter of congestion, with parents choosing to drive their children to school, even when healthier options may be available to them. Leading walking and cycling charity, Sustrans Cymru, is now recruiting schools for its successful active travel programme which gives young people the opportunity to integrate physical activity into their everyday lives; as part of the school run. The Active Journeys programme, which is now open for applications, supports schools and local authorities to improve routes and organise a range of activities that develop a whole-school approach to active travel. The deadline for schools to join the programme is Monday 4 June 2018. Fewer children being driven to school will create a better and safer environment for children and will help reduce gridlock for those driving in congestion hot spots. Recent reports state that childhood obesity is a major health issue in Wales, the worst in the UK, and a lack of

physical activity is one of the main contributory factors. Against a backdrop of lifestyles that are increasingly sedentary, we need to give children as many opportunities as possible to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle. The school run is the perfect time for this, not only is it a healthier way to travel, studies demonstrate that it leads to increased alertness and better concentration levels, resulting in improved academic performance. Schools that have previously taken part in the programme have

witnessed up to a 14% reduction in the number of children being driven to school.

Active Journeys was recently extended by the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Ken Skates, who said: The programme has “proven to be exceptionally successful in the schools that it’s operated in, with 88% of respondents said that the number of pupils cycling to school had increased as a consequence of this programme.”
