Heritage and Culture at the Heart of a Great Place

We all know Wales is full of great places, and a new National Lottery supported programme will promote the use of culture and heritage as driving forces to help make these places even greater.

The Great Place Scheme, launched in Wales

is designed by

the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and partners to promote intelligent investment in place- based regeneration. Thanks to National Lottery players, grants of £100,000 to £500,000 will encourage applicants to

work together to consider how to enhance the role of culture and heritage within society and use them to tackle such wide ranging issues as poverty, inequality, employment, education and health. The Great Place Scheme can include everything from town and city wide initiatives to smaller, rural proposals and between fi ve and eight projects will be funded across Wales. The activities could range from

using arts and

heritage in the provision of local education and health services to increasing people’s skills

McDonald’s restaurants in Wales raise over £1 Million

New accommodation for families who have children in hospital in Cardiff has received a signifi cant boost following the donation of more than £1 million by McDonald’s restaurants in Wales. The money has been donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The independent charity is building the fi rst Ronald McDonald House in Wales, with 30 bedrooms providing a free place to stay to families who have children being treated at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital and neonatal unit in Cardiff. The new Ronald McDonald House, which has been developed in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, is due to open this summer and will accommodate families from across Wales and further afi eld who have children being treated at the hospital – a major centre of paediatric services. Jon Haward, Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities, says: “We’re delighted with the support we have received from our friends and supporters in McDonald’s restaurants across Wales. Thanks to their generosity, we’re moving ever closer to providing this vital service for the fi rst time in Wales, which will make such a difference to the parents and families of children from across Wales and the UK who are cared for by the hospital.” To fi nd out more about Ronald McDonald House Charities and how to support them, visit: www.rmhc.org.uk.

Kay Andrews, UK trustee and chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Wales, said, “The Great Place Scheme is an opportunity and a challenge for local leaders to work together and put culture right at the heart of their plans.
