Summer Llandeilo Fawr Festival of Music 2017

One of the factors which have played a major role in the establishment and development of the Llandeilo Festival of Music, helping it to take the prominent place in the increasingly competitive British festival scene which it now occupies, has been the way in which the town’s leading institutions and tourist attractions have sought to involve themselves in the Festival’s success. The National Trust were the fi rst to recognize the Festival’s potential to attract visitors to the area and they became enthusiastic partners of the Festival in promoting both indoor and outdoor evenings at its iconic Newton House (the former home of the Festival’s Patron, Lord Dynevor). Next came Aberglasney Gardens, where a number of very successful Open Air Opera performances were staged as well as some memorable jazz evenings.

Now the third member of a unique Llandeilo trinity of historic buildings has come on board. Golden Grove mansion, the third such structure to occupy this magnifi cent woodland site, was built by the 1st Earl Cawdor in the early part of the nineteenth century and remained in the occupation of the Cawdor family until 1935. Its present owner, Richard Salmon, has long since expressed a desire to become involved with the Festival and this year he gets his wish when Golden Grove will be the venue for the launch of the seventeenth annual event. There will be a musical soiree at the house, on Friday 16 June, featuring pianist, Gerald Jones. The concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and, if the weather permits, we shall be holding this on the lawns of the mansion. ( if you watched the recent serialization of Evelyn Waugh’s ‘Decline and Fall’ on BBC television you may remember the surreal ‘Sports Day’ on those same lawns!) You may wish to consider therefore bringing a folding chair if you would prefer to avoid ‘standing around’. The musical entertainment to follow will of course be in the house itself and there will be chairs for those who prefer to sit at the same level as that on which the Bechstein Grand Piano will be situated, rather than using the more elevated vantage points provided by the ornamental stairs. If you intend to sit on the stairs then please feel free to bring a cushion along with you. This will be a delightful, and novel, way of launching the festival, said its Artistic Director, Julia Jones, and we are extremely grateful to Mr.Richard Salmon for his support and for making it all possible. Tickets £15 (to include Champagne reception and a fork buffet) 01269 594303 / 01558 823294 www.llandeilomusicfestival.org.uk

For the past three years they have

performed modern twists on classic pantomimes, this year’s tale being A-Lad-In-A Talent Contest…for those that couldn’t guess, is a twist on the classic tale, Aladdin. The witty script is a wonderful adaption on the original tale with the cast made up of staff, volunteers and service users. They encourage everyone to go and see one of the four performances in the YMCA Theatre, The Walk, Cardiff from 15-17 June. Monies raised will be reinvested into their work! £800,000 investment to protect environment in Ynysybwl

A £800,000 investment is set to get underway in Ynysybwl, delivering a boost to the local environment and residents. The project, delivered by not-for-profi t water company Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, will see a new sewerage system constructed in Ynysybwl, bringing long- term benefi ts by improving the wastewater network in the area. To help Welsh Water complete the work quickly and safely, parts of Daren Ddu road will be closed in short sections between June and October. Access will be maintained for residents during this time and a diversion route will be in place. Daniel Purchase, Project Manager at Welsh Water said: “We are committed to investing in our wastewater network for the benefi t of our customers and the environment. Our work in Ynysybwl represents a major investment in the wastewater network and will deliver an environmental boost to the local area.“
