FAIRWAY CHALLENGE RAISES OVER £3600 TO HELP LOCAL CHILDREN

Cardiff schools won a special Pudsey visit

Keen golfers from Wales & West Utilities got into the fundraising swing by raising thousands of pounds to help young

children born with

spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy at a recent charity golf day. The event, organised by Wales & West Utilities’ Leigh Hemms who has a daughter Ayla- Mae who was born with the condition, raised an incredible £3600.

Through his tireless fundraising and support shown by his colleagues and employer, he has now raised around £20,000 over the past two years which goes directly to help local families in a similar position to Leigh. Over 40 of Leigh’s colleagues from across the business took to the fairway at the Celtic Manor Resort as part of the day-long

event which also saw a raffl e and auction held. Spastic

Quadriplegia, also

referred to as spastic quad or spastic quad CP, is a form of cerebral palsy that means the “loss of use of the whole body.” It’s the most severe of the three types of spastic cerebral palsy, marked by the inability to use the legs, arms and body. Pontllanfraith’s Leigh, who works as part of the despatch team at Wales & West Utilities, explains:

“When we were given a diagnosis for Ayla-Mae we knew things were never going to be easy – both emotionally and fi nancially. I set about trying raise as much awareness of the condition whilst doing my best to raise money to allow us to buy specialist equipment to essentially bring the hospital

environment into our home. “Making

this happen

has

been fantastic and Ayla-Mae has benefi tted a tremendous amount and I want to try and help as many other families as possible.”

The money raised will go towards helping two other children

with the condition

– 5 year old Aiyla Fear from Abertilllery and Port Talbot’s Aoife Thomas, aged 2. Leigh added: “From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you to everyone at Wales & West Utilities for making this possible - I have a continuous amount of support from my colleagues and employer. Being able to make a signifi cant amount of money is fantastic and every penny will go towards making a difference to two very special little girls.”

Pudsey, the iconic BBC Children in Need mascot, has visited Howardian Primary School, The Cathedral School and Coryton Primary School in Cardiff as part of the Pudsey Schools Roadshow, celebrating schools across the country participating in the Big Spotacular, the schools fundraising campaign by Lloyds Bank and BBC Children in Need. Howardian Primary School, The Cathedral School and Coryton Primary School were three of just 20 schools nationwide to win the Pudsey Schools Roadshow visit, having been one of the fi rst to sign up for a free Big Spotacular charity fundraising kit. Following the success in 2016, this year the fundraising campaign is back and encouraging school children and teachers across the UK to go spotty for BBC Children in Need. In the weeks leading up to the Appeal Night children and teachers are dressing in spots, selling spotty cakes and goods and taking part in spotty themed challenges to raise money. BBC Children in Need and Lloyds Bank are encouraging schools to request their free The Big Spotacular Fundraising Kit, which is full of tips and tools to inspire young fundraisers across all age ranges: Those interested in fi nding out more about the Big Spotacular, requesting a free fundraising kit and downloading a host of free resources can visit: www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/schools
