Care home resident raises £1,150 for Macmillan Cancer Support

A resident at Greenhill Manor Care Home in Merthyr Tydfil has raised a whopping £1,150 for Macmillan Cancer Support through various coffee mornings organised within the home.

Inspired by her own battle with bowel cancer,

Alison Savory,

48, arranged a number of coffee mornings throughout the past year, creating her own posters and advertising the events in the home and on her personal social networking sites.

Fellow residents, team members and members of the local community flocked to the dementia and nursing care home, who also offers care for younger people with physical disabilities

to donate to Alison’s

cause and the events have become popular for socialising within the home.

Alison said: “In April 2016 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer and my world was turned upside down. I had also lost my mother to the same cancer in 1984, then in September 2001 my father had passed away from lung cancer.

“I made the decision to stay strong and fight this horrible disease and I couldn’t have done it without

Alison Savory, 48 with Fundraising Manager for Macmillan, Nicola Newham

the help and support of the Macmillan nurses, who were there to comfort me whilst I was having chemotherapy. They made what should have been an unpleasant time, a time that was bearable and full of laughter and smiles. “I will never be able to give them all the gratitude they deserve, but I can raise money to help them treat others with every bit of love, care and dignity they deserve.” Lifestyle Leader at Greenhill Manor, Amanda Francis said: “Alison has

been the driving force behind all fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support at Greenhill Manor. “She has inspired her community, the team and visitors to all get on board and help raise as much money for such a worthy cause.” Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Nicola Newham added: “Alison is truly an inspiration to us all and we are so lucky to have such fantastic support!”

Baskerville Hall Hotel Clyro Court, Clyro, Hay On Wye HR3 5LE Built in 1839 by Thomas Baskerville The inspiration behind Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskervilles.

Cardiff’s own best-selling author and world renowned documentary filmmaker Jon Ronson returns to the Welsh capital at St David’s Hall on Thursday 16 November. Over the last 20 years, Jon has made his name for his ‘gonzo’ style of journalism and investigations of controversial fringe politics and science. In 2011, he released the fascinating book The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry, which delved into the topic of psychopathic behaviour via the Hare Psychopathy Checklist and examined its reliability. The book forms the focal part of his Psychopath Night at the National Concert Hall of Wales. Within its pages, Jon interviewed people in facilities for the criminally insane as well as potential psychopaths in corporate boardrooms, and he reached a staggering conclusion…You don’t have to be Norman Bates to be a psycho – they’re all around us in our everyday lives! Tickets are £17.50 (plus an additional £3.95 Ticket Service Charge per transaction and an optional £1 postage fee). To book your seats, please visit www.stdavidshallcardiff. co.uk or call the Box Office on 029 2087 8444.
