Believed to come from an era when English sailors would be tricked into joining the navy. The trick involved giving the unsuspecting man a beer with a coin at the bottom. Once the man had hold of the coin, he was deemed to have accepted payment and was swiftly enrolled. They would say ‘bottoms up’ to the people they drank with in order that they could check for any hidden coins in the glass.

Magellan originally launched his expedition as a means of finding a western route to the Moluccas, a small archipelago in Indonesia known for its stores of precious spices like cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg. After weathering horrific storms near southern South America and losing one of his ships to rough seas, Magellan finally entered what is now known as the Strait of Magellan in November 1520. His beleaguered fleet would sail the Pacific Ocean for 98 days before reaching any habitable land.

and more yachts are stating in their recruitment adverts that crew must be vaccinated or willing to be. There’s a lot of ripples being caused with some crew declaring this is against their human rights. Is it? Well the only choice seems to be like it or lump it, so will the industry lose more crew?
PLASTIC USAGE As more yacht crews
become conscientious of their single use plastic consumption on board, it’s been interesting to see companies such as Mallorca’s STP Pinmar team up with Ecoworks Marine to offer in store refilling stations for their EcoYacht Wash product. Not just saving money but more importantly, reducing plastic usage is always a good thing.
GOOD TO BE GREEN Experienced crew have been in huge demand this season and the start of summer exposed the fact that there simply weren’t enough interior crew this year. Whether they were stuck in South Africa/NZ/Australia, or had simply decided not to bother with yachting this year, there was a deficit. On the plus side more green crew got snapped up.
WORTH YOUR SALT It seems the latest wave
of crew don’t feel the salary they’re paid is a fair reflection for the sacrifices they’re making. Counter arguments usually mention the fact that crew members pay no rent, no food, no bills, and not even for toiletries whilst getting to travel to various parts of the world whilst being paid but the feeling is that it’s not enough. Curious to see if these people will move ashore to work for less money, increase their outgoings, in order to see friends and family more? Is that the only perk?
