WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF DIGITAL AND ANALOGUE RADIO SOLUTIONS ONBOARD?


The age-old issue of poor connectivity, or ‘not spots’, is exacerbated when at sea. Poor connectivity can be a result of many factors and it’s the last thing you need in the middle of a charter, the ‘big match’, or when the boss and his family are on board. The most common problems tend to occur when a preferred partner network signal is weak because the SIM is forced to use that network – steered roaming, or when a data plan is running low, or a cap is exceeded. To improve connectivity and the onboard experience, an ‘unsteered’ roaming SIM, like our 4G Extra, overcomes this issue. It has no priority network and seamlessly alternates between the best available connections, significantly increasing coverage, performance, reliability and resilience. Likewise, when running low on data, notifications ensure all critical onboard applications and services stay online.


The advance in gyro stabilization technology we are seeing today is among the most important innovations in the recreational sector, vastly enhancing the onboard experience by reducing seasickness and improving comfort. Gyro stabilizers eliminate boat roll when at anchor, or zero speed, with a spinning flywheel creating a force that is transferred into the hull structure and through the gyro’s foundation. During development of the Smartgyro gyro stabilizers, key innovations were incorporated such as running the flywheel in a vacuum to minimise heat generation and reduce power consumption. We also used precise control electronics equipped with algorithms, as well as liquid cooling and electronically controlled braking. The game-changing modular design allows the unit to be disassembled inside the boat for easy onboard maintenance, reducing downtime and costs.


Global yacht sales have gone through the roof since the start of the pandemic and nowhere is this more apparent than in the superyacht sector. The ripple down effect is the additional sales of ancillary equipment. Outboard engines are perhaps the strongest example of this. Superyacht owners are increasingly turning to diesel outboards to power their tenders: the reasons are usually threefold; the safety of carrying only diesel on the mothership; the long-term financial benefits of reduced running costs and the versatility of delivering up to three times the range of a gasoline equivalent. However the linchpin is the service and support once the engines are installed, Cox Powertrain created an industry first engine management app, Coxswain™. It is based on a proven format used by prestigious car manufacturers. The message is clear, the customer is king, and their trust must be earned.


Analogue radio


modulates one voice call for each 12.5kHz band, with no encryption making it easier for anybody to monitor crew and guest movements. However, despite their trusty and dependable nature, analogue radios remain an enormous security risk, when the need to keep communications private is so important. Digital radio encodes and encrypts the voice, allowing more channels for a frequency. This means the calls are routed so that disciplines are securely separated. Deckhands and engineers can be contacted individually without other radios picking up the conversation, while the captain can still listen to them all. Unlike analogue, digital radio is feature- rich with text messaging, priority and private calling while enabling data transfer, which allows the transmission of alarms and service calls as well as the GPS location of handsets and tenders.
