Emission, Mission Critical…

In late October and early November 2021 the annual United Nations climate change convention took place in Glasgow.

C

OP26 is the annual UN climate change conference. COP stands for Conference

of the Parties, the summit will be attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty that came into force in 1994 (hence we have reached annual convention 26).

To get a sense of perspective, here in the UK since 1991 the economy has grown by 78% and emissions have been reduced by 44%.

In 2012, 40% of our electricity came from coal. That figure today, just nine years later, is now less than 2%. By 2024 we will have completely phased out coal power.

n The UK is the largest producer of offshore wind energy in the world

n We will have planted trees on 30,000 hectares of land per year by 2025

n We are doubling our international climate finance to help developing nations with £11.6bn

The UK has set targets to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035 and to be net zero by 2050.

The Supply Chain

At the 2022 Executive Hire Show, the UK plant and tool hire sector will gather to demonstrate the latest innovations and product developments that manufacturers distributors and service providers have, to support carbon reduction and neutrality with the hire industry.

We spoke with three members of the rental supply chain to find out their positions.

Trime (UK) Ltd, is a manufacturer of lighting towers, with 90% of their UK sales made to rental companies. Trime has a current market share in excess of 70%. I Spoke with Managing Director Paul Hay.

“The lighting tower started life as commodity product – as long as it produced light, that was all that was needed. Requirements have become more refined and there is a greater demand to have more sustainable options, driven in part by the demand from major contractors working on government contracts.”

Trime launched the X-ECO Lighting Tower in 2016 and then developed a hybrid unit in 2018, followed by a solar/hybrid model – which was recently awarded the International Green Apple Award. The latest addition to its range is a totally solar lighting tower.

For the period 2019 to 2020, sales of these products grew 30%, from 2020 v 2021 sales increased by a further 30%.

In 2010 the company produced around 19,000 lighting towers, of which just 15% were eco-friendly. By 2025 the forecast is for sales to grow to 25,000 units, of which 94% will be powered by alternative fuel sources, giving zero emissions, zero fuel usage and zero fuel cost.

A tax change to the red diesel rebate, effective from April 2022, will increase costs and make hirers look again at alternative fuel sources, as the commerciality alone becomes an even greater burden.

The business has been working hard on product design so that they are more compact. Meaning hirers can transport more units on a full load, reducing miles travelled, truck movements and further reducing emissions.

In terms of what’s next, Paul see’s further improvements to battery technology: “Lithium powered units are already highly efficient and rapid battery advancements will take us much further. The first hydrogen-fuelled machines are now with us and this technology, once the infrastructure is in place, will provide a considerable, viable, alternative fuel source.”

At Obart Pumping Solutions, Sales Director Pete McMutrie joined me in conversation.

“The company has been creating its green agenda since 2012, with aspirational initiatives undertaken to do the right thing for the business and its employees, in addition to listening to the needs of our customers

Obart Pumps recently underwent a carbon audit.
