Fraud: the fastest growing industry

A new forum is aiming to help professionals work together to defeat fraud

Laurie Beagle Managing director, Forums International lauriebeagle@forumsinternational.co.uk

Fraud is very much the ‘fastest growing industry’ and fraudsters always seem to be one step ahead. Our goal is to change that pattern through education and support. On 16 May 2019 we, Forums

International, together with our partners Graydon UK, DLA Piper, and the CICM, held the inaugural meeting of the Fraud Prevention Network (FPN). The forum is for the B2B community, with the primary aim to keep up with ever-changing fraud trends and techniques. These quarterly forums are designed to help firms form a community to combat all types of corporate fraud. The members of the FPN will be able to exchange experiences, knowledge, and best practice to prevent and reduce losses caused by criminal activities. The association of the partners combines legal guidance, technical anti-fraud solutions, and practical tools for a network of like-minded professionals and relevant industry experts. The FPN will be the ‘go-to place’ when members need help. The FPN is for professionals of all levels who are responsible for

fraud prevention in their company. The only exception is that suppliers are not allowed to attend unless they are pre-contracted Corporate Partners or speakers. Our promise to you is: you will never be directly sold to when you attend a forum meeting. We will hold quarterly meetings where attendees can expect open

discussions, presentations from fraud-prevention experts, and specialised workshops – supported by a network of dedicated fraud analysts and investigators – alongside access to secure members’ communication channels and a working-hour help desk and support line. Members will have access to the Forums International website

where they will see the latest news and advice, together with a secure members area where we will host presentations and workshop results. At the inaugural meeting the agenda included: l Setting the scene – we set out the forum’s objectives and benefits, and asked the attendees what they wanted from the forum in terms of content and value. Also, who we should invite to attend. l Developing a fraud-prevention plan, best-practice workshop – each meeting will include workshops where the members can build

best and new practices. We started off with a fraud-prevention plan which will be published and available to the members. l ‘The fraud proposition’ by Alan Norton, head of intelligence, Graydon UK – a very insightful presentation which included: the cost of fraud, defining commercial fraud, the challenges in preventing commercial fraud, and how to tackle commercial fraud. l Successfully managing

fraud

investigations, Laura Ford, partner, DLA Piper – which included: whistleblowing, internal investigations, bribery by an overseas agent, investigations into tax evasion, customer data loss, price collusion, and market abuse. Also a walk through a typical investigation process.

l An overview of Action Fraud and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau by Emma Brown, detective sergeant, business stakeholder manager – Emma set out the scale of the challenge, how to report, and then what happens, action fraud customer channels, current trends and threats, changing behaviours, and so on. l Final session, the way forward Laurie Beagle and Simon Blackwell. The next stage is for the partners to review the attendee’s feedback

and present in the next week or two the FPN proposal. Attending the FPN for the first time is free. We encourage you

to come along and gauge the benefits for yourself before making a commitment to join. The next meeting is 25 September. For more information e-mail: fpn@forumsinternational.co.uk.
