Felci 65 – by Persico The brief was for a unique yacht, capable of participating success- fully in long offshore races and at the same time being perfect for relaxing cruises. Mixing such different elements can be complex and certainly one must have a full knowledge of the two worlds, the ‘racing’ and the ‘cruising’, in order to succeed… The project starts from a solid hydrodynamic base of compre-


hensive CFD work to determine which canoe form offered us the best compromise between resistance and form stability. It is only by getting these two criteria right that a genuine dual-purpose yacht can deliver great sailing potential plus strong performance under engine along with comfortable motion at sea. Aerodynamically the hull is clearly streamlined, with Maxi72-type


treatments of the topside areas and relatively low freeboards. Displacement is low, but the hull is extremely powerful with wine- glass sections that offer good dynamic stability and power at high heeling angles and reduced resistance when upright. We are talking about a 20m yacht weighing only 18.5 tons thanks


to state-of-the-art composite construction – carbon sandwich infused with epoxy resin and varying densities of PVC foam. The interior furniture is similarly built entirely of lightweight materials further driving down VCG. In terms of righting moment the ‘final touch’ is a CNC-machined lifting bulb keel and a maximum draft of 4.4m! From the aesthetics point of view, we believe our latest yacht


sets new standards in combining such an elegant contemporary profile with excellent sailing performance. The fixed bowsprit is cleanly faired into the reverse stem and the hull-deck chamfer in the adjacent bow region is very accentuated. This theme is carried on into the coachroof giving great dynamism and movement to the design while offering further aerodynamic benefits.

Although opting for a flush deck configuration, innovative low


coachroof windows still deliver remarkable interior brightness. The interior layout features a clear delineation between the aft area, dedicated to the galley and captain’s cabin, and generous forward areas for the owner and guests. The interior styling, developed by Felci Yachts in collaboration


with the owner, evolved into a minimalist, clean and linear theme, with nice contrasts between natural teak and matt white lacquered surfaces plus numerous elegant little carbon details beautifully added in by the yard. The mast, boom and bowsprit are Hall Spars high modulus, the


rigging is carbon C6. All the yacht’s principal operating systems are also carefully integrated into the hull structure, thanks to a complex global engineering approach more common in the world of production yachts than for a one-off design. Umberto Felci, Lake Garda
