The Longtail 30 Our pandemic project was the design and construction of a 30ft daysailer that we call the Longtail. We designed the boat for a Seattle client who has spent much of his life sailing high-perfor- mance boats such as 5o5s and Melges 24s. He is now in his 70s and is looking for a boat that is easy to sail with one or two people but still fast and fun to sail. As a person who is well into the process of ageing out of the International 14 fleet this was a design brief that hit close to home. The formula that we came up with was a narrow, easily driven


hull with a deep high-aspect bulb keel for stability. For light weight, simplicity and reduced waste we used CNC-cut okoume plywood for the hull and internal framing. To minimise the weight of higher VCG items we used resin-infused carbon-skinned foam core lam- inates for the transom, cockpit, deck and house. In the interest of minimising weight aloft we invested in a hybrid high- modulus/ standard modulus carbon rig from C-Tech in New Zealand. All up the lightship weight of the boat is 1,500kg with 850kg of that in the keel. The fabrication of the boat was split between a wooden boatbuilding shop (Emerald Marine), a composite boatbuilding shop (James Betts Enterprises) and myself. We spent a lot of time optimising the deck layout for shorthanded sailing. The boat has a fixed sprit asymmetrical spinnaker with a two-patch takedown line and below-deck takedown chute (à la Int 14), a roller furling self-tacking jib and a narrow headed mainsail with lazy jacks and a centreline permanent backstay. The major sail controls are led back to a central sheet-handling post in the cockpit (which I built from a broken Int 14 sprit I had in my shop). The mainsail coarse and fine-tune are on flip-flop blocks on the aft side of the post and the jib sheet comes up on the forward side.

Upwind the jib sheet is on the winch mounted to the top of the post. Downwind the 2:1 jib sheet shifts to a cam cleat and the spinnaker sheet takes over the winch. All sail handling can be done without leaving the cockpit. For auxiliary power we are installing a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric
