Diego Botín flight controller, Joan Cardona Méndez grinder 2 and tactician and Mateu Barber grinder 1. The woman is expected to be Tara Pacheco and as a substitute Andrea Emone. We pay a great deal of attention to our replacements because of possible injury and also Covid. Joel Rodríguez is our precious wildcard – able to sail as wing trimmer, flight controller and even as a grinder. Ñeti Cuervas-Mons will continue to substitute for the two grinders. In addition to being young and talented, their sporting ambition and the great unity of our team are our best assets. SH: Will Cádiz be repeated in 2022? MMR: Yes, we signed for two seasons and will be back next year. We are very happy with the acceptance of the event and its success with the public. We have recently heard from many other interested cities but we stay with Cádiz. The local authorities are also very happy. But right now a possible venue for 2023 is a distant issue. In addition, except in the USA they do not do two events in one country, although we proposed it to SailGP as we had many firm proposals from Spanish cities. Maybe in 2023 it can happen but it is difficult because there are many cities around the world that are now showing a lot more interest. SH: What would you change in SailGP? MMR: Having less time pressure, but I understand that it is necessary for things to go better. It seems that everything is going very fast, that we will not arrive on time. Honestly, all the issues that we thought could be improved have been worked on. We are on the right track, there is a good strategic plan, I am proud. The issue of giving women more visibility has already taken shape with the appointment of a person in charge. The idea is to create a parallel league, but my criticism is that women should have a greater presence onboard, that they begin to have key positions. We have to give them the tools to grow as sailors, because if not they are at a disadvantage. It seems to me that if only one woman can travel to each event and she suffers a problem the second girl on the team will not be able to make the substitution; and to look for a local substitute is not realistic. In addition, coexistence is more difficult for her if only one woman is sailing. But I am not unhappy about this because a real effort is already
being made by the organisation and the new project is ambitious. SH: But is the environment still very masculine? MMR: Although some women have positions of some importance it is true that it is a very masculine world. The hard core of SailGP is made up of a woman and three men.
Of the 10 team chiefs I am the only woman. But for me the more complicated thing is that the other nine are all successful sailors; when technical issues are to be discussed I will try to consult Jordi to prepare myself for the meeting. In management matters I have no issues at all, neither because I am a woman nor because of my professional experience. But sometimes on the dock I do notice a pose of superiority from some of the sailors. But never among the other team leaders or from the staff of SailGP. Carlos Pich
AUSTRALIA No time to fool around – Part 2
Baptism of fire in Cadiz, bearing away at over 50kt, water boiling around the foils… and fear being your worst nightmare. Volvo and SailGP sailor Nina Curtis talks to Blue Robinson. Seahorse Magazine: SailGP racing in Cádiz, and your first day was a light one, which has its own challenges on an F50. Nina Curtis: It does – the guys on the boat are already really dialled in with five people onboard, to the extent that when there is an additional person onboard there is a fair bit of discomfort. I am in the wrong spot – right at the back of the boat, not where you want an extra 60kg, and you can sense the challenges of carrying that extra person in a finely tuned team in those super-light conditions. This meant we were all left trying to figure out how to get me out from the back and into any other spot on the boat. Then the trouble is that under the rules we are all tethered in for safety, so I could sometimes ease out of the cockpit and maybe sit a bit further forward... but I was pretty limited! SH: How did day one unfold? NC: We had a really good day. In training we were performing really well, and we seem to race better than we train, which meant we were comfortable leading into the Cádiz event. The boat felt good,
