Update
actually for the 30th celebration of Peter’s sad assassination. After the wonderful speeches from the Rear Admiral François
Bellec and my son Arnaud, what could I say to the 80 important people present? I decided to tell again the origin of the Lucky Red Socks. Few present knew that story started in the little boat that brought Peter, Pippa and their two children one day in San Diego in 1994 to welcome back the two Black Magics after their day of training. And the discussion that happened between Pippa and Peter about the dark pink socks that I wore. Peter was teasing me a lot. Pippa was not listening. And she
decided to give Peter a similar pair of socks for Christmas. But you couldn’t find that special colour in San Diego. Only red. By January Peter was quietly wearing his new socks for the Louis Vuitton Cup. Then the brilliant commentator Peter Montgomery one evening com- mented on national radio that Peter was not aboard that day – when John Bertrand beat NZL-32. It was their only defeat and NZL-32had actually suffered a serious hydraulic leak. Plus Peter had stayed ashore because of a bruised shoulder. ‘The man with the red socks was not aboard today!’ Peter announced to a big audience that night. ‘The man with the lucky red socks was not there!!’ Soon afterwards hundred, thousands, hundreds of thousands of red socks invaded New Zealand…
THE THIRD AMIGO – Barry Carroll Art Mitchel, who we recently lost, helped create the finest company in the recreational marine industry. It is a given that Harken means innovation, quality and value in all its products. But due to Art, Peter and Olaf, Harken is much more than excellent gear. They built a company and developed a team that continues to exemplify the best in business practice and ‘moral compass’. And, oh by the way, the most fun in the industry. In nearly 40 years doing hundreds of thousands of dollars of
business with Harken we never had an issue that wasn’t resolved easily. With that volume of business, especially with raceboat gear, there is always something that needs sorting. With Harken their people are actually eager and happy to get it right. Instead of a complaining client, you feel like part of their team. And you get an invitation to the next party! They truly have a different mindset on business, and that came
from the Big Three. I don’t want this to sound like a Harken com- mercial. It is not. I think getting to know and work with Art, Olaf and Peter was one of the best things that ever happened in my career. And, Peter, you know Art and Olaf are right there looking after
you with their normal indulgent grins. Thank you, Art, you will be missed, but not forgotten.
q SNAPSHOTS Brought to you in association with
Olaf Harken, Art Mitchel and Peter… unusually well-behaved. ‘There is a word that is uniquely Art Mitchel: Sisu. Expressed less by Art in words, but always shown in deeds. Anyone who sailed, skied or ran with him or did business with him witnessed his uncommonly strong Sisu. Sisu is hard to define. Sisu means grit. Sisu means duty. It personifies a willingness to do work that no one else is willing to do, simply because it’s the right thing: even in silence when no one is watching. No matter how hard that work is. Sisu and Duty made up Art Mitchel’s moral fabric.’ – Bill Goggins, Harken CEO
