Modern rooflights help restore historic building to former glory

LAST year, Spanish City in Whitley Bay underwent a £10m restoration to reinstate the historic visitor attraction into a new leisure hub as part of a coastal development plan driven by North Tyneside County Council. Constructed in 1910, the building has a

distinctive dome, which has been given a new lease of life. The ceiling of the central space has been removed from the ground floor to allow visitors to see the iconic dome and the architectural detail. Rooflights from Xtralite were used to

flood the building with as much natural light as possible and to capitalise on the sea views afforded from certain aspects of the building. The company supplied products from its X-Glaze range which incorporated a series of self-supporting 37.5mm double glazed units with dimensions of 4.92m wide and a slope length of 2.52m pitched at 5° 7 units covering an area of 86.78sq m. The double glazed glass units were made

up of 10mm thick Guardian SunGuard 70/35 toughened solar control outer pane,

16mm Argon filled cavity with black spacer bar, 11.5mm thick clear heat strengthened laminate with Ionomer interlayer and black boarder to give building users greater comfort. Practically, the units were fitted

directly to the builder’s kerb and resulted in a 1.2 W/m²°K Ud value (relating to the glazing units only).

Helping to create a woodland haven for holiday makers

DUE to open this spring, The Lodges at Feldon Valley Hotel combine fine dining and luxury accommodation with a picturesque Cotswolds setting and a prestigious golf course. The project includes refurbishment and complete interior modelling of the existing club house to create the restaurant and bar, along with construction of the main 13 guest room ‘lodge’, and four satellite lodges. Designed by the architectural practice,

Design Engine, to complement their natural setting, the smaller lodges are connected to the main hotel building via a raised boardwalk and provide a secluded getaway destination with views of the woodland and countryside. “The client was very clear that the vision

for the project was to create a hotel that complements the natural setting and makes use of natural materials, so the satellite lodges have been designed as a homogenous shape with natural timber cladding,” says lead architect Amanda Moore. The project called for a waterproofing

membrane that could encapsulate the battening system for the timber cladding on the pitched roof. Firestone’s RubberGard

EPDM roofing system was installed on the four satellite lodges. The battens were then installed onto the completed roofing membrane and the contractor began the process of carrying out the detailing for the 400+ battens on the roofs, adhering a strip of RubberGard EPDM to each primed batten and sealing it to the base

membrane with Firestone QuickSeam Splice Tape on each side, and 9” QuickSeam Formflash at the top and bottom. Once the waterproofing was complete, the timber cladding could be installed to the roof and external walls.
