New benchmarks for leisure construction

IN this issue we feature some exciting firsts for the leisure sector kicking off with the hugely impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which sets a new benchmark in global stadium design.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

The new stadium design and wider scheme aims to deliver an unrivalled fan experience and significant community benefits – creating a world class sports and entertainment destination for all.

(See page 12 )

Also in this issue, we profile an impressive feat of construction engineering where a 25m swimming pool and spa has been built within the existing structure of a sports hall - the construction industry’s equivalent of squeezing a ship into a bottle.

This is the first time a project of this kind has been successfully executed in the UK and forms part of the £7.4m refurbishment and extension of Monmouth Leisure Centre for Monmouthshire County Council in South Wales. (P20)

Keeping with the swimming pool theme, we also look at how the architects Saunders Boston is creating the world’s first 50m swimming pool constructed from Cross Laminated Timber. (P23)

Populous has designed the stadium to deliver one of the finest spectator experiences in the world, with uninterrupted sightlines and spectators closer to the pitch than at any comparable ground in the UK. The stadium has a fully retractable pitch and is the first purpose- built home for the NFL in Europe. The matchday experience is everything, with a range of food stalls, a microbrewery, and a 65m bar – the longest in Europe – which mirrors the full length of the goal line on the pitch behind. (P12)
