Winning façade for racecourse hotel
DESIGNED by KKA Architecture, the Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster Racecourse uses Shackerley’s SureClad ceramic granite ventilated façade system across all eight storeys of the hotel. Combining a natural cream finish with a
distinctive grain, the façade system contrasts with highly-polished black ceramic granite. “The effect we have created on the
elevation that overlooks the racecourse is one of a giant flat screen TV, with the darker curtain walling of the face forming the screen and a lighter outline of cream- coloured SureClad ceramic granite creating an impression that the glazed façade is
Fibre cement for texture and interest at sports pavilion
A NEW sports pavilion in Edinburgh is one of the first projects in Scotland to use EQUITONE [linea] fibre cement facade on a large scale. The facility at St George's School for Girls
has been given a crisp aesthetic by the facade, which displays a linear surface that highlights the raw inner texture of the core fibre cement material. Approximately 340sq m of the cement
facade was used for the pavilion, which was designed by DRD Architects and incorporates new changing facilities, ancillary accommodation, and a multi- function meeting and conference facility. “Due to the building's location beside
sports pitches, we wanted a high-quality material that was durable and able to

withstand all weathers. The school was also very keen on a finish on the building that was as low-maintenance as possible,” said Joanna Smith, architect at DRD Architects. “We chose EQUITONE [linea] as we
particularly liked the way we could create light and shadow on the facade by rotating the boards in different orientations,
allowing the texture of each one to create different light patterns. The overall look of the facade is very uniform and precise, yet the patterns the boards form when the light shines on them make each elevation look different and visually interesting.”

floating within a stone frame,” explains Alex Geddes from KKA Architecture. The road elevation frames a cream
stone-like façade with polished black ceramic granite. Meanwhile, the side elevations feature a long column clad in the cream-coloured SureClad system to create the frame for the race course elevation, giving the building a delicate appearance. “The building was designed as a
thermally-efficient, lightweight structure so we needed a façade solution that would provide all the high-end finish and aesthetic appeal of natural stone with the loading and buildability benefits of a lightweight, slim-profiled system,” says Geddes.

specification of contrasting colours and textures and the use of large format 1198 x 598mm panels in both vertical and horizontal orientation. The hotel is located close to the road
network and much of the façade is the pale creamy-beige colour but the impermeable nature of ceramic means that the façade will retain its high-end aesthetic over time The Hilton Garden Inn at Doncaster
Racecourse is the eighth Hilton-branded hotel to be specified with SureClad façades in the UK.
