Trial brings healthcare to heart of community
M
obile healthcare facilities are becoming an increasingly- popular solution to help improve
efficiency and cut waiting times across a number of key medical specialities. An example of where this approach is
being used is the recent partnership between Yorkshire Cancer Research, EMS Healthcare, and Alliance Medical. The collaboration brings the UK’s
largest lung health check programme to the heart of communities. Part of a multi-million-pound
investment in ground-breaking initiatives that will improve lung cancer outcomes and increase early diagnosis; around 7,000 people will be screened during the trial. Carried out in partnership with Leeds
Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Leeds, and Leeds City
Council, the trial will test the effectiveness of community-based lung health checks, utilising EMS Healthcare’s innovative Liberty unit connected to a mobile CT scanner provided by Alliance Medical. The fully-equipped mobile facility will
be taken into leisure centre and supermarket car parks where clinical staff will be able to carry out crucial scans as well as checks of lung function. Dr Kathryn Scott, chief executive at
Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: “The outcomes of this initiative will be instrumental in influencing how we deliver effective lung diagnosis services in the future, and in ultimately improving patient outcomes.”
